Re: Micing a Leslie?

My typical leslie micing techniques are either to use two dynamics like SM57 on the top rotor, spaced as close to the far edges of the front as possible. Then I will put a LDC in the middle of the bottom rotor, usually with windscreens on everything. Sometimes, I record it in mono, and in that case,...

Re: Coolest studio

Were you guys playing or engineering on these sessions? Roger, what's cool about Rear Window? Chris I was engineering or "assisting" or "guitar pedal guru-ing" at them. Rear Window is such a fun place, mostly because the owner, a member of the great Boston-based band Four Piece Suit, is a cool guy ...

Re: Coolest studio

Studio A at Avatar.

You've never recorded drums until you've heard them in that room!

Rear Window in Boston (Brookline) is pretty sweet too.

HELP! ADAT repair

I just called our usual ADAT repair shop to touch base and it seems they no longer deal with Alesis at all. We had been taking our ADATs there every 500 hours to have the rubber parts changed. We're about due for routine maintenance and it seems we're S.O.L. Does anyone know of a repair shop in the ...

Re: Gettin' the combo organ sounds

The B4 sounds killer. We also have a great software Mellotron (M-Tron) that rocks too.

I end up using a Roland JV1080 a lot too. We have a card for it with a zillion great organ, wurli and mellotron sounds on it.

Re: Everything new is old again

When the Flaming Lips say "Do you realize that every one you know will someday die?" it gives me shivers. Not so "In and around the lake, mountains come out of the sky. They stand there." but by the same token, I LOVE Cocteau Twins and Wire. Cocteau Twins sing in gibberish for the most part. At lea...

Everything new is old again

I've been discussing this with some friends lately, how a lot of "new" bands that we love are very inspired/influenced or at worst, completely ripping off bands/music from the past. I don't say this with any malice. Because I like Kings of Convenience, it makes me want to listen to Nick Drake and Si...

somewhere there's music...

Sometimes I can listen to Les Paul and it just makes me realize that technology may have progressed and music may have evolved, but I don't think anyone has done anything quite as revolutionary as what he did in the late 40's. I listen to stuff like Vaya Con Dios, Tiger Rag and How High the Moon and...

Re: What's up with Echoplexes?

I've been lucky enough to amass a pretty cool collection of echo boxes over the years and having them all available to me, I STILL go for my five-knob deluxe Memory Man more often than not, and my old Korg SDD-2000. There IS something about Roland Space Echo preamps though. They make stuff sound rea...

Re: effectron/effectron II

I wish I could find an old magazine ad with the whole line in here.... I think they used some of the same boxes with different names on them as they went a long. The Effectron with 1024ms at some point might have been designated the Effectron II. I believe the Effectron III is the programmable one (...

Re: What did you work on tonight?

had a cancellation so I built fuzz pedals all day. Roger Anything especially cool? By the way, I got to borrow a pair of Stapes form Motormantra. Now he may not get them back. Chris Yeah, those Stapes are incredible. At least I think they are. I use them for just about EVERYthing. As for pedals, I ...

Re: Wow, inside scoop

I wonder whether it will be similar to the Black Finger pedal they have out now. That is a very "nice" sounding "tube" compressor pedal. Doesn't do the super-squish that I wanted in a guitar compressor, but it might be great for the studio. Maybe this is a stereo line-level version of the Black Fing...

Hi Jeff.

I'm not sure who to rent from in Boston, to be honest. I left a message with Jay at Mercenary, but I know how they feel about ADAT heh heh....

HELP! I need a 20-bit ADAT for two hours....

Anyone in the New England area have an XT or LX-20 that I could use for two hours to transfer a project into PT?

I would be forever grateful if someone had a lead for me.
