Re: Low Phantom power from 500 rack?

And a little rant: I know it's normal to expect companies to not really care about their small time customers, but i guess I've been lucky to deal with enough audio companies that have a pretty generous customer service standard that it pisses me off a bit that API doesn't seem interested enough to ...

Re: Low Phantom power from 500 rack?

more info - again it will help to narrow down to the L200PS or the 500V rack as the problem. https://www.apiaudio.com/product_specs.php?id=110 https://www.apiaudio.com/docs/brochures/brl200ps.pdf how long have you had it? API says they have a 5 year warranty - api 200ps.jpg Yeah, unfortunately neit...

Re: Low Phantom power from 500 rack?

Have you peeked in the power supply? First thing would be to make sure nothing is obviously burned/scorched. Second thing is to see if there's a fuse on the 48V line, and make sure it's good. Third thing would be to make sure all components are visibly OK - soldered in place, no legs broken off, et...

Re: Low Phantom power from 500 rack?

Well, API just responded to my email saying they'd be happy to work on it for $120/hr plus parts, or have me contact my dealer to have them deal with it. That's a bit of a disappointing response. Not entirely sure what my next step is. I'll see if anyone I know has the same unit and can lend me thei...

Sounds like a bad PSU. Probably you should start worrying that the other outputs are nearing the end of their lives as well.
What do you mean by the other outputs?
Power supply outputs - +48, +15, -15...
Right!

Just checked and they're +16.3 and -16.3

Re: Low Phantom power from 500 rack?

I don't ever recall hearing bad things about the AEA pres taking too much power. And I have a couple of Capi VP312's in mine. in fact my rack is full (10 modules) and they all work fine. so yeah, if you are only getting 13v then something is wrong. you might check the pinout on that supply to see i...

Re: Silly electronics question.

Thanks for the help! Just for fun, here's what my 10 year old was working on and we finished today: single chip electronic dice! (You can see the parallel capacitors in the middle...)

Re: Low Phantom power from 500 rack?

Not mentioned above: Is this problem new, or has it always been this way in this rack & w/ these preamps? Also, which preamps are they? And which rack unit? Additionally (from FNMs suggestion to pull units out and keep testing, I was reminded) I believe I read somewhere that the Retro 500pre draws ...

Re: Low Phantom power from 500 rack?

Can you take stuff out easily? You could pull each unit one by one and re-test, there may be a chance one of them is faulty and effecting the rest. Disclosure: I've never owned a 500 series anything. I wouldn't worry about, or F with reading amps that much since that's when stuff tends to get toast...

Re: Low Phantom power from 500 rack?

Grab yourself an auto-ranging digital multimeter (a must have tool for life in general). Set it for DCV (DC voltage), touch the black lead to pin 1 of the XLR from the pre (or the case if it's metal and that's easier), that's ground. Now touch the red lead to either pin 2 or 3, while still holding ...

Low Phantom power from 500 rack?

So, I think my API 500 10 space rack may not be providing enough phantom power. Is that a thing? Basically, I've got 4 pres in the rack. When I have a dynamic or ribbon, everything sounds fine. When I plug in a condenser it gets a little quieter (to different levels, depending on the mic, some barel...

Re: Silly electronics question.

Ok, one more question about reducing. Let's say you have 2 100k resistors in parallel. Would it be 100k - 100k, essentially canceling them out and saying there's no resistance?

Likewise with, say, 2 470pF caps in series?

I'm having a hard time wrapping my brain around why either of those works.
