If you are to send a track to your compressor and print the return, the latency is normal and to be expected, in which case you would just nudge your track back so it lines up with the original track, which you can by zooming in an finding the sample start, although the trick mentioned above is grea...

Now I get it, thanks Tad...I've been wasting my time with non-U87 mics, no wonder it never sounds right. Fuck...my mind is officially blown.

- make sure you're using 'pre-fader metering' - try placing the mics differently, a bit further back from the source perhaps can't think of any other options at the moment, ad I don't remember if the 002R had pads on the mic pre inputs, probably not or you obviously would have tried that by now. If ...

so.. the line level is -10 right? than i put it in a di, i've just a reamp that can work as a di or a preamp, are you sure that i don't need the reamp? the d.i. makes it at + 4 right? and into the eh etc.. what i don't understand is that i have to put the signal at -10 to make it at +4 with a di, i...

I also find the various drum kits in Logic to be very usable. As with all midi drums, you really have to spend some time with velocity levels and nudging notes, of course all depending on the sound you're after. I've used Battery 3 "full jazz kit" for 2 rock songs recently, as I find it a very usefu...

thanks for the replies, the patch bay is in the rack but nothing connected to it, I'm going with Toaster's approach at the moment. However, should I decided to permanently wire them in with the Ensemble, do I route one output to the 160 (say number 7) and return on the same number 7 input, or could ...

I've been reading the 11 page thread about these over at 'that other' forum, ahem... Anyway, the verdict is out and from what I can gather......they sound absolutely wonderful but not very versatile, although extremely usable and pleasant on just about every source imaginable. By 'not very versatile...

Just got my first outboard compressors!

Nothing fancy, but I just scored a pair of DBX 160X's for under $400, it was worth the grueling trip to the upper east side of Manhattan, lol! So yeah, I'm psyched, excited, happy as a clam in heat. I've yet to set them up, and now I'm faced with a few possibilities. As I don't yet have any outboard...

$500.

Another reason to just get a 160A and be done with it.

thanks for the replies everyone...
I love old gear with big VU meters as much as the next recording nerd, but I'm gonna hold off on the Altec, would rather get something more useful and versatile, probably gonna shop for a 160.

Indeed that is what I've read about the 160, a good and simple little workhorse compressor, and most of what I know about recording and gear is from reading boards like this one, and asking a lot of questions to friends who have more experience in the field (Toaster 3000, Joel, etc.), so in a sense,...

I was looking at getting a DBX 160A/X as my first outboard comp, just something simple to start tracking bass and vocals with, but an Altec 1612B is available for about $500 around here, just wondering if it's a worthwhile investment.

Thanks for the reply, more are welcome.

I had my Fender Stratocaster (MIJ) stolen last saturday 8/30/08 after a gig at Zebulon in Brooklyn. I play live maybe 2 or 3 times a year, and gear never gets stolen there, but it happened to me. I set it aside on the stage in it's gigbag case (basic black with a "30th Street Guitars" imprint on the...
