Re: When should you normalise?
* Normalizing based on peak (not RMS) level does not perform any destructive math. It just doesn't. If I'm wrong about this, someone please explain to me why. If you have a track whose peak is at 0.9 of full scale, and you normalize it to 1, that means you're multiplying every data point by 1.11111...

Re: When should you normalise?
If i were a sampler/looper, i might normalize for convenience, but as an audio-only person, i never do. What i do instead is insert a trim plug to adjust the gain to whatever level i want. This is as good as normalizing, but more flexible. I can adjust the volume anytime i want without adding a new ...

Me too, audio tracking editing and mixing all work great.JES wrote:Actually, I only use DP for audio (for now. . .soon, there will be MIDI!) and I have to say that I think it's absolutely great for audio.

Re: "Getting" Digital Performer
When i first acquired DP, i spent a lot of time with the manual. For a few weeks. I haven't touched the manual since. It's a program that makes a lot of sense, actually, once you get over the first hurdle.

Re: Audio Technica 4033
I hafta disagree with you there. I have found the 4050 to be clean, transparent, extended, while the 4033 to be closed, tight, sometimes dark and sometimes thin.Professor wrote:I own two 4050s (almost identical to the 4033)

Re: a question about accurate headphones....please help!!!
No. I find headphones excellent for picking out details, flaws like pops and crackles and stuff, but terrible for overall mixing. I would never judge compression or reverb on phones, and i'd be very careful judging eq. I've done good work using headphones for a first pass, and then reworking later o...

Re: Guitar amp for violin/cello
The best amp i've found for my cello w/fishman is my silverface deluxe reverb. it thickens the sound more than other amps, while still having enough bite. even with this amp, however, i've never been happy with the sound. i prefer to play my zeta electric cello when i have to amplify. note: i don't ...

Re: Sound treating the mixing room...
i'm concerned about that because the foam on the walls affects high end and midrange more than low mids and bass. your concerns are well-placed, sir. the main problem with small rooms is with low frequencies. the room resonates at certain low frequencies, so you get hot and cold spots in the room a...

Re: What mic for live violin
earthworks makes a handheld cardioid mic for live vocals that i'd imagine would make a great all purpose sound reinforcement mic for acoustic instruments. i've never tried it, but based on my experience with other earthworks stuff, i'd definitely check it out. http://macmidimusic.com/prod.itml/icOid...

Re: bunch of foam in closet needs to go on the walls, HELP!
Stuntbutt is right about the edges of the foam tiles adding absorption, so you want to leave them exposed for most bang for buck. As for where to place the tiles, i'd put them on the wall you plan to be singing into, because that's the first surface the most sound will hit, so you'll get the most ab...

Re: low budget gain staging question
Assuming you're using the preamp on a console, you'd want to take a send from that channel and patch it into a line level input on the console to give it another few dB. Any device that accepts a line level input and can supply some amount of gain will do fine. A compressor with makeup gain will do ...

Re: analog -> digital :(
I'ev had hardware-software miscommunications such that something got recorded at one sample rate but was marked as a different sample rate and played back too slow. It wasn't protools, but it wasn't supposed to happen and it did. I fixed it, but using some heavy-duty non-music software. Sounds to me...

Re: pulling down master fader?
"because the meters are hitting red" is the wrong reason to use compression. the right thing to do in that case is to pull some faders down (or use a trim plug to reduce the level). on to the next question: do i pull down the master fader or all the channel faders? i don't know the answer to that on...
