Re: Little Steven's Garage Rock fest

I think the phase problems can be attributed to the wind that was blowing all day long. Top end gets smeary sounding at outdoor events and can disappear if the wind blows the wrong direction. There may have been other sound issues too (like Jody Stephen's dead vocal mic during the Big Star set), but...

Re: any sound designers might have a chance for some work

All excellent points, rydberg, and the seamy underbelly does need to be exposed for those dreaming of fame, fortune and snogging the leading lady (oh yeah...unless you have to record them for some reason, you will spend next to no time with the actors and at the opening night party they will not kn...

Re: any sound designers might have a chance for some work

Throwing in my $.02... I was a freelance/resident theater sound designer here in Philadelphia for about 5 years and I was lucky to be able to work with a lot of incredible directors and actors. It's a strange niche industry but can be extremely artistically rewarding. What you have to go through to ...

Re: the one mic you want most

A pair of Telefunken ELAM251s. Used to have a sequential serial # pair over at the day job for awhile on loan. You can kill with mics like that.

Got 20k? As in dollars?

Re: Who is Tom Waits?

Getting started at either Rain Dogs or Swordfishtrombones is gonna only give you the post-Kathleen Brennan side of things. After you're done with those 2 records, start at the beginning of his catalog. (Closing Time, Heart Of Saturday Night, Small Change, Heartattack and Vine..) Amazing shit, really...

And make sure to check out the DVD of the making of "Never Mind The Bollocks..." Cool interview segments w/Bill Price as well as info regarding how that record was tracked/mixed. Search Netflix for the Sex Pistols and you'll find it.

Re: Am I on Acid?

Yeah, sounds like you're high. Leigh is right: stereo tracks need to be panned hard L/R to remain stereo. Otherwise you get plain ol' mono. If you're "finally getting imaging", it probably means something's out of phase somewhere. It's probably either the outputs of the Tascam deck or the out...

Re: Napoleon Dynamite

I thought it was a lot like the Sunday comics - no plot, underdeveloped characters that were instantly forgettable and that you couldn't care less about, 2-dimensional dialogue and in the end, not that funny at all. Feh.

MTV Films also co-produced. Doesn't that say enough?

Re: I need a new place to live

same goes for D.C. We're busy people and we don't like other people crowding up our streets and getting in the way on the sidewalk while we frown or stare unhappily at passerbys. Jesus, have some respect. Yeah, and here in Philly...hey, what da fuck are youse looking at? You gotta fuckin' problem o...

Re: Nothing beats real mastering....

(ever had a master come back that was terminally weird but the band is fine with it? or a band that sends it for duplication before even really checking it? i love bands...but you know, it happens...) This happened to me a couple of years ago. The label insisted on using a mastering engineer that th...

Re: control-room less studios

Just chiming in here... I work at a post house during the day and there's obviously a control room in every studio. But I've been working with a friend for a few years in a one-room situation and it's a lot different. We're only recording bands, so it's a lot looser than ye olde daye jobbe. It can b...

Re: QOTSA "Songs for the deaf" Sessions

Not only do the drums sound weird on the QOTSA record, the whole album sounds weird. It's not the dryness either - there's nothing above 10K in the mixes. I think that's why it translates so well to radio play , tv spots and film trailers. It's all about guitars and vocals. You certainly can't use i...

Re: Mojave 3 Guestlist

Lurking for months, finally posting...

If you guys make it to Philly in February (or before), I'd LOVE to be on that list. Saw Neil Halstead solo at the North Star here last year and he was unbelievably good. Hope to see ya - and what an offer!
