Re: I'm much happier now...

Good on you for recognizing the problem as a problem and not "needing" the gig so much you couldn't walk away. I've been in the same situation a few time and could not always afford to get myself out of it. No fun. That said, real asshole clients are pretty rare in my experience. More often I've had...

Re: Cheap Spring Reverb Solution Volume IV - Budget Consumer Equipment (FOSTEX 3180)

Which convolution reverb do you use, and do you need a different program to create the impulse? I I use the Waves IR plug but really only because it was on the house computer at the studio I used to co-own and it was a known commodity when it came time to buy something for my own system. It works j...

Re: Cheap Spring Reverb Solution Volume IV - Budget Consumer Equipment (FOSTEX 3180)

I have a QSBII (QuadraSoundBlender) what is a small 120v. spring unit with a two prong sold under a cuppla names - I think mine is Monkey Wards - as (not so famously) used by such artists at that one guitar Player in 3 Dog Night and, well, him. It's kinda not at all like a 7ender spring, but it sou...

Re: Cheap Spring Reverb Solution Volume IV - Budget Consumer Equipment (FOSTEX 3180)

It's basically sampling spaces or reverbs for use with a convolution reverb plug in. You feed a tone sweep into the device (or room) and record the result. The plug in uses the result to create a digital version of that space. I do lots of location recording and find it very useful to be able to sa...

Re: Cheap Spring Reverb Solution Volume IV - Budget Consumer Equipment (FOSTEX 3180)

I've had pretty extensive experience with both the tapco and fostex. A studio that I've done a ton of work at has both and they both get a work out. I feel like the Tapco unit is head and shoulders above the fostex. It sounds way smother, quieter and classier. I like it so much that I made an impuls...

No idea about the original question but this is a fun read of you're into Chess and that era of recording.

The class notes used to be out there on the web but I can't seem to find them today.

Re: I’m about to record some drums, help me not screw it up

If it's any consolation I've been recording drums for 25 odd years now and still frequently struggle with toms. They're often the problem mics for a multitude of reasons. If the tuning is bad, open tom mics will just give you a wash of bad overtones on every kicks and snare hit. If the player sets t...

I'm in Spain for three months and needed something to keep my hands busy. It's surprisingly better than it should be.

Re: My poor hears are getting old

I have a bit of the same. I had chronic ear infections as a kid and have had an industrial strength tube in my right ear since the 90s. The hearing in my right ear is worse then the left but not terrible. If I have a head cold or allergies all bets are off. Mixing in mono on an auratone has changed ...

Old Band, New Record

Today my band has release it's first record after a 14 year break. It was recorded mostly live off the floor in my tiny garage studio just before Covid closed the world. I'm super proud of it. Have a listen if you've got time. https://fembotsband.bandcamp.com/album/transfigurations There some pictur...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

Just picked up a University Sound 2040 Omni dynamic for $20 at a flea market. I can't find anything about this mic online and info on University Sound is hard to come by too. There seems to be an Altec connection at some point in their history and they also seem to have rebadged EV mics at various p...

Re: I’m about to record some drums, help me not screw it up

That’s a shame, it seems like a more or less foolproof way of getting some stereo spread with a solid center. if you have time, by all means, try it. maybe it's the sound you are looking for... Don't disqualify anything until you hear what it sounds like. Recommendations here are just us spiitballi...

Re: Building a DIY plate

I built a plate about 10 years ago. It was a failed experiment at best. I built mine with angle iron and sheet metal from Home Depot. By the time I got it tensioned tight enough to approach sounding good the frame was starting to bend and buckle. You want a flexible piece of steel tensioned pretty t...
