Re: Live recording, in a single room.

if the room is small and the volumes are pretty loud, then placement isn't going to matter much. the drums will be on everything, so will the bass, etc. if the volumes aren't loud (closer to acoustic levels), or if the room is larger (~10feet between players), then you can think more about separatio...

Re: Bose -- weird or not?

guys, guys. i'm as much of an audio snob as you, but i challenge any of you to show me a boombox with the same dimensions as the bose wave radio that can fill a large room as well without cranking the volume. also, note that it's really loved by (and marketed toward) classical and jazz listeners. i ...

Re: About sex in London...

Wasn't it in Catcher in the Rye that our boy Holden talked about someone giving someone else the time of day as a euphemism? "I hear she gave him the time of day out behind the store last summer," or thereabouts. I think this lady just gave us the time of day, folks!

Re: Militant Grammarians of Massachusetts

My fellows, I am pleased and gratified that someone of us has finally seen fit to stand up and take notice of all this unwarranted tomfoolery. Those who would play fast and loose with the printed word shall no longer do so with impunity! Together let us put a stop to such lamentable use of language....

Re: $2000, a drum kit, a room, and vocals

i like your original idea. will combine well with what you have. the earthworks are incredibly versatile, especially if you record any acoustic instruments (including gtr). i would think that betwen the tc30 and mc012 pairs, you'd have sdc condensors covered for a while. 414 versus 4050 is a matter ...

Re: Quick Answer Needed

sm58 and tascam 424, anyone? if you've got a computer, then use protools free (or audacity, or something else) and record through the built-in mic input (griffin imic if your computer has no mic input). upgrade with some kind of a separate mic preamp (such as mackie 1202 or audiobuddy, etc.), or may...

Re: science behind preamps

If all a preamp does is boost the signal higher then why do they make $50 units and $1500 units? what are the differences? i just wanted to say that that's a really good question, and kind of confusing and impossible to answer adequately. i remember after buying my first mic, a $60 dynamic, i was r...

yes, it is. you'll still find plenty of use for the 4033, but the 414 will bring you a whole new dimension of versatility and range.

Re: The first time I ever walked into a "real" stu

in 1995 or so, i played a session (on cello) at Sound Techniques in Boston. very nice, spacious, well-equipped place, i think the artist (a friend of a friend of mine) was in there because some other friend of his was interning... we were there after hours, with a bunch of amateurs running the show....

Re: How much about mic matching is just hype?

it's a fine line between "perfectly matched"
and "close enough"

for most of us "close enough" is close enough
but i don't doubt that "perfectly matched" is sometimes necessary

Re: usb vs. firewire vs. pci

i've had get success and no problems whatsoever with firewire. in general, though, i think it's less about the connection type and more about the particular drivers and how stable they are. once metric halo got their drivers figured out, my box has never failed.

and when you're done with all that, try moving the amp to a few different places in the room. you didn't mention what the amp is, but if it's open-backed then it matters whether a wall is behind it, etc. also, different spots in a small to medium sized room sound different, especially with regard to...
