I can't believe no one listed two of the funkiest songs of all time from one of the greatest musicians ever!
Herbie Hancock - Chameleon
Herbie Hancock - Palm Grease
?Palm Grease? has probably the sickest drum beat of all time! and also the most LoFi drum kit ever.

Re: 2-track open reel recommendation?
I have a 1/4" Ampex AG440 that I allways mix to. I run a dbx roise reduction unit on it which is kinda funkey but the end result is great! I still get a little hiss but no one outside the studio hears it. the AG440's are really well built machines and you can pick one up in the low hundreds range. I...

Re: NPR story: Analog Tape Fading Into History
I don?t think tape is going anywhere anytime soon. I just used two reels of GP9 last night. Just like vacuum tubes and vinyl, as long as people want tape they will be able to get it. Hopefully Quantigy makes enough off of CD?s and other digital media they can afford to keep making good tape. I am su...

Re: good condenser for distortified guitar
A lot of times for a Metal / HxC tone I use a SM57/NT1 blend. But my new favorite for a single mic is the AKG C535eb. It's a "live vocal" mic I discovered it one day when I was mixing a live gig and it was the last mic left and another guitar player showed up. It sounded great in the mix, so I tried...

Worked on this tube line mixer thing I'm building for a keyboard rig. Kindof based on the Altec 1567.

Re: Walter Sear makes me cry
I totally agreed with Walter. I was blessed enough to be raised / educated in a studios with 2" Tape, Neve consoles, old Altec and UREI gear. I knew right off the bat that 90% of the gear out there today will do nothing but destroy your tone. So I realized since I can?t afford to buy good gear, I wo...

oh, ok sorry about that, I tried searching Blue Ball and didn't find anything. I guess I should have searched "Blue Ball" or something. Thanks for the link.

The SM57, Masterpiece of Mediocre?
Everyone's got opinions, and everyone has at least one SM57.

Does anyone own and / or use the Blue Ball?
After hearing the Blue rep rant at the winter NAMM show I decided to check out this phantom powered dynamic mic. The rep mentioned that starting this spring Guitar Center was going to start selling them for $99 instead of $199. So I waited and noticed when I went to the local gear pimp that the Ball...

Re: need help with nightmare recording session
Well, I'd offer to rerecord and if they get all crazy then tell Them to jump off a bridge. I wish I had to record Jazz bands. I'm stuck with "Emo" bands.

Re: crap sounding records... that are great!
Two of my favorite LoFi albums are Pedro the Lion - Hard to Find a Friend and Starflyer 59 - Gold. not LoFi like one mic, but definately not typical "Pro" recordings. Making bad sounds, sound good!

Jay Bennett - Altec 1567a
Jay Bennett mentioned in his interview that he managed to repair an Altec 1567 to be quiet. I am about to recap and service my 1567 that is still all original and almost unusable because it?s so noisy. I wondered if any one knew a way to contact Jay, or his secret to make the 1567 quiet. I?m guessin...
