You may be able to ground the electronics to the body of the mic...I recently sent my Avalon U5 back to them for this mod because it was picking up our FM station (92.9)...it's not AM-only.

Yes, it will need a balanced signal path. I ran into problems feeding an unbalanced input from Grace 101's (older model). You can read about this in their manual online, I suppose.

Keep the Firestudio and work on mic placement and getting good levels going into the device. There's no need to upgrade based on the limited info you've posted...you're not exactly bitching about anything. If you want to add a mixing board, get one that has direct outs on each channel.
