Re: Gain Riders?

I actually shoot for Unity at all times. I like the sound of returning something at the right level better than the sound of fader attenuation. Gain structure keeps things "open" and clear. I dont think a "zero mix" is about tracking a quiet string part too low to get a desirable S/N or tone, you ju...

Re: Is the difference b/w 44.1 and 96k really that huge?

I used 96k and mixed to a studer two track.

I couldnt find a "dither" button on it anywhere.

That IS a good point though, when I have to get the mix back into the box
( if I am the one doing it at all...) It should be 88.2k.

The staff used to be cool until they got Mauro in there.

Re: lexcicon reverbs, what say you?

I like all the lexicon stuff. Even the cheap ones. I also used the room verb on an SPX90 recently for an entire record. There goes any credibility in this department I guess... :)

Re: A philosophical question on compression

In my humble experience... I meet people who say weird things like " I dont like compression" Or , "I think people over compress" or conversely, "I love this compressor, you cant even hear it!" When I hear their finished product, it sounds just like the other guy that said " I hate 700 Hz, I just du...

Re: Vintage Mics

Why doesnt anyone sing about hats OR tomatoes anymore? I think the squirrel nut zippers tried to rock this kind of sound, but failed. It just sounds like a one mic recording in a modern recording studio. Whatever. Doo rag used to do it really well. They sounded like an old 78 rpm record LIVE! Singin...

Re: Stereo Buss Compression

I use a neve 33609a Every time. EVERY time. I cant believe anyone would use anything else. I didnt like having a buss comp until I got one. I used to use other stuff, but I would barely hit it. like hardlly at all. I got the 33609, and things mix themselves. Awesome. More punch, density, and shine t...

Re: Compressor decision help!

The limiter on those symetrix 501's RULES. total destruction. I have a 150 and I love those things. Ashley made a single channel comp that is cool in the same way the 150 is cool. I like those little comps for certain things A LOT though, Like a Blown out center ambient mic... Like a cmv 563, throug...

Re: MD 409 Vs 609e???

I liked them both, but I dont think they were meant to sound alike, right? They dont. One is not better than the other, just different. I have always liked the 409's when I would bother to use one. I used a 609 on an old tweed fender champ turned all the way up, right next to a BK5, and that sounded...

Re: 2 track mix down machine

If you have a properly aligned 1/2" machine, and have the resources to keep it running well, it will treat you to a nice "finishing touch" on your mixes. I have been running a studer 1/4" machine, and I am constantly amazed that at +9 at 15 ips with GP9, you cant even really tell the difference betw...

Re: Is the difference b/w 44.1 and 96k really that huge?

The difference is only really apparent when recording things with long decay tails, or delicate tibres. I have recorded a rock band at 96k, mixed to 1/4" and captured the sound of the two track at 192k and I really noticed the difference in punch, separation, and clarity. I also noticed that I had n...

Two questions

Does anyone know where I could find schematics for some Neumann PEV eq modules?

AND,

Does anyone know who the heck will work on old MXR rack gear? My blue face delay died, and I dont know who to talk to about this one.

Thanks, y'all.
