try the dbx 164. it has rca i/o, but can operate at +4. mine seems to sound much nicer than any 163 that i've used.

i rarely hear anything about the dbx 164. i love that box. i've been told that it is just the stereo version of the 163, but mine sounds a bit smoother than the 163s that i have used. anyway, it's dirt cheap and sounds quite nice on bass and kick when they benefit from a slow attack.

if anyone has any inline balanced attenuator pads that they want to sell, please let me know. thanks so much.

i don't know about the "dorsey mod", but i typically use the chinese bodies with russian capsules. the output is a bit hotter and the mics seem to sound more open this way.
