Re: my first session/tape op appreciation

Looks sort of like a Weeble on crack with two glow sticks taped together and spinning rather pointlessly.

Looks sort of, that is...

But much more Star Wars-like.

Hey Everybody!

I just got the new Star Wars Kid signature series thread. It weighs a ton and doesn't make any sense!

If I ever "freak out" on overheads, I'm giving up.

Re: Stereo Overheads point horizontal or vertical?

Yeah, I did a jazz thing last weekend where I tried Blumlien and didn't dig it, so I went with a spaced omni pair, only to wish I'd gone with that behind-the head-thing. Oh well. Like I said, it's all about the situation. Glad it worked for you.

Re: Soldering Question

Try tinning the actual tip of the iron, too. I find this helps alot, especially when I'm first starting. Liquid solder will help make other solder liquify faster than the tip of your iron by itself, so if there's a bit of solder already on the tip of your iron, it will heat up the solder on the cont...

Re: Stereo Overheads point horizontal or vertical?

These are all good points except that I have to disagree with limiting yourself to cardiod mics. I use a different "overhead" technique on almost every session I do, largely depending on the room the drums are in (I freelance and move around alot) and style of music I'm recording. I do have a behind...

Re: recommendations for a mid to low budget console

Yeah, the Soundtracs Solo Midi consoles sound okay, too. They're a bit noisy, but the Topaz desks are much quieter. I worked for three years at a studio that first had one of the older 24-channel consoles and then installed a newer 32 (which I think were designated the "Project 8"). I then went on t...

Dave,

I think the Star Wars kid works at Electrical. I saw him there in December. He was on a break from the Motley Crue tour.

Yeah, maybe you should check their website. I hear it's pretty good. Electrical Audio's, that is.

If you've got $3k to spend, maybe you should get Steve Albini to do it. I hear he's good.

Re: recommendations for a mid to low budget console

Hey Nathan, Soundtracs used to make a series of consoles called the "Topaz." These consoles are incredibly underrated and no one seems to know about them. The mic pres are quiet and extremely nice-sounding. Not at all harsh. Good headroom, too. The EQs are not the least bit ringy and have (if I reme...

Re: cheap small diaphragm condeser ?

What's up with the Stapes mics? I thought the cool thing about them was that they were $200 a pair. Will they be offering two different series now or discontinuing the older ones? If they're such great mics, why discontinue them? I have a friend who has a pair and says they're "okay." I haven't gott...
