I sent their mastering engineer something to master about a decade ago, when we had a phone conversation about the tracks he brought up some very real problems (I was pretty green then), and also said he thought the kick was a little too dynamic and that at their studio they wouldn't record a real ...

yeah, what's the quality of samples in those Alesis modules? are they versatile or do they scream "Peter Gabriel record?" a big plus would be to be able to trigger a sampler so I could make my own synthetic drum sounds. would also love to hear from guys who did this sort of thing back in the day. I'...

analog hardware drum triggering / sample-replacing
OK, so I've been trying to scope out the possibilities of hardware-based sample triggering from tape. no DAW involved. I definitely don't need to sync a drum machine or sequencer to tape, I just need to be able to use tape tracks to trigger drum samples. reinforcing kicks with 808 kicks, snares with...

yeah, totally not an issue in front of a raging guitar cab, or as drum overheads (mostly), but suddenly a BIG DEAL when you're using Coles ribbons in Blumlein in front of a string section, or the like. I also have a pair of old Shure 315 small ribbons that sound great on almost everything but eat pr...

it'll totally work, as long as you're only aiming for a little reduction. too much can sound odd. Aphex gates for life, over here. I use them every day. speaking of vocal phrasing stuff, my best recent gate trick was this: I was mixing a track with a bunch of background singers who hadn't glued thei...

not specifically involving the Tchad Blake technique, but in terms of having a kit "wild card" mic, I love the EV 635a or other dynamic omnis with my Level-Loc. up above the overheads, or out in front about three feet from the kick. also sometimes high enough to catch reflection from the ceiling. 58...

I'll put the Demeter tube DI up there as my favorite for passive basses, having tried most of the rest (except the REDDI). not a definably "colored" sounding box to my ears.
also don't discount a good passive box like the Radial JDI if you provide some kind of good clean impedance buffer beforehand.

I'll reiterate the "righteous/essential" position. especially being very specific with your chosen cutoff frequency. it sometimes helps to remember the key of the song & take notice of the part being played. I high-passed an electric guitar recently to remove mud (it was a hollowbody playing big cho...
