I say "down with the album". I don't want to pay for or listen to every piece of filler that Roger Waters or whoever wants to stick on a concept album. I know these things are considered sacred, and I grew up with them, but I am at the point now where I prefer to have the option to disassemble these...

biasing is for record calibration and has no effect on playback. Don't know the machine but that control may be for fine tuning and there are probably trimpots somewhere for record/playback calibration. Bias calibration depends on the tape and tape speed. I think the usual practice would be to turn ...

Back in the day, It was customary for real time duplicators to buy custom loaded cassette lengths either for a specific job or to buy multiple lengths to accomodate any job. Once upon a time there were people with rooms full of Nakamichis doing real-time cassette duplication for the discerning conte...

It was a huge freakin piece of plywood. The size and type were specified exactly. Don't remember though!

Yeah the guy danced while he played fiddle and sort of slided around sometimes on the plywood. It makes foe a sort of swishing brushes on a snare drum sound. The salt if I remember correctly provides an abrasive element that enhances that. Oops, a quick wikipedia glance says sand and gravel. It's be...

If I remember correctly, the one time I did sound for John Lee Hooker (solo), he just asked me to mic his foot stomping on the stage. John Hartford had a large piece of plywood as part of his contract rider, you had to acquire it for him. When he showed up he attached 2 contact mics and put salt on ...

My question is... how does it sound? the Putney etc. were supposed to have a diode ladder filter, a different and distinct sound. I think the korg ms-10/20, Roland TB303 and a few others used a similar topology. Not that I have a real one to compare it to. I'd just have to play back "On the Run" fro...

This company has a ems synthi plug in. Not cheap. Haven't tried the demo or anything. The real thing is something I've always wanted (but will probably never have!). Kind of like the e-music equivalent of buying a Sunbeam.

Doing a quick tour of ebay, it seems like there's not a whole lot of cheap real analog to be had these days. The Yamaha CS stuff does look like a nice option. I used to have a cs-60 that sounded great. I still have a soft spot for all these weird old hybrid digital/analog machines that nobody partic...

"I had a DW-8000 for about a year and I sold it...definitely don't regret that one... " Of course it all depends on what you're looking for and what is useful to you. It is in fact somewhat limited in function without does not have complex routing, has digital oscillators and envelopes etc, but it d...

Octave Plateaux Cat. Amazing complex monosynth if you can find one. Nice warm analog sound. Korg Mono-poly. Not sure how much these go for nowadays. Korg DW-8000.EX-8000. Somewhat limited with digital oscillators and env generators (not fast enough for snappy attacks) but huge fat sounding filters. ...

I don't have one but my understanding is that they can't be calibrated. The 192 has trimpots for the inputs and outputs of each channel. Unfortunately the 192 I have has 4 bad analog input channels (5-8) and is out of warranty/ bought second hand. From the 192 IO manual, I think it says the 96 is fi...

Personally, I don't think the RE-20 and the 421 don't sound similar at all. For openers of course, the RE 20 has no proximity effect giving it rather different characteristics on the low end. Also, to me, the RE 20 sounds flatter and more natural in the mid range/high end where the 421 sounds more c...
