New York Dave, you mentioned the Tascam M-30, which I do see for sale pretty cheap. I think I can get away with only 8 channels, no problem. Does it also have the direct outs and mic/line switches? And do the pre's sound okay?

Thanks for clarifying that--that actually makes a lot of sense. I guess I had the busses confused with direct outs.
If anyone wants to chime in with some suggestions for boards that they've used in this situation, that'd be really cool.

Yet more mixing board advice needed
Okay...I unexpectedly had the opportunity to buy a 1/2" Teac 80-8 8-track for cheap, and now I'm realizing my little Shure M68 mic mixers probably won't cut it. I don't own a whole bunch of mic pre's so I guess I'll have to buy a board for tracking as well as monitoring. I assume that means a board ...
