I've heard them called "bass harmonicas" too. (that works on ebay). it could possibly be a bass melodica as well. That instrument was featured quite often in old esquivel tunes as well. (melodicas have a keyboard, so it's easier to do chromatic runs, etc..) I love the way those flabby reeds bend whe...

What a badass post! Steve, your description of what you did is nice and vivid, and I love those percussion samples. (musically and sonically, I mean..) The reverb is real unique, and it changes the color alot. Sounds cool, and you've got the only one! (every one else will "improve" upon it...) Thank...

I cannot remember all of the times that the 57 has been the perfect choice. When one has a few more expensive choices, it sits patiently in the cabinet, biding it's time, gathering dust, whispering "yoohoo!, Old faithful over here...."

OOOOOH, a 664!!! now you're buck rogers! I LOVE that thing. KILLER vocal sound. It can soak up 50 pounds of compression and it pokes through the mix like a piece of re-bar.

A 57 is a fine choice for a snare. Peeking over the rim is a traditional place to put the mic as well. Are the 2 snare mics printed onto the same track? Usually, when you combine 2 mics on either side of a drum, one of them ought to have the phase (polarity) reversed. A unnaturally thin sound could ...

the 1960 was my first piece of good gear. I have always adored that thing. Both the pre's and the compressors are incredibly versatile.
That all being said, I've always wanted to hear a 6176.... But that 1960 is a classic, as far as I'm concerned.

I've found that when I put the mic on the grill, I tend to get that reedy treble that doesn't sit with warmth in the mix. In the context of the mix it's thin. Then I start cutting treble and I realize I mic'ed it wrong. I agree with randy, it sounds a bit better in front of (or above) the accordion,...

Is there a "Lead" singer for some parts? Do different folks have solos? What kind of room are you recording them in? A coincident pair could work great, but to get lots of coverage with lots of potential for closeness with a minimum number of mikes, I think a decca tree set up ( 3 omni's) could be m...

You know, I realized years ago that he was making pretty much the same record over and over again.... but then I realized that was ok, because I LIKE that record. you must suffer and pay and pay to keep your crap running. It is the first rule of recording. You should NOT have to pay as much as a "money is no object" person, but you will pay and pay. And it is worth every penny you don't have. I would GLADLY pay $50-70 an hour for a true badass, but there is N...

A pair of UM70's were my first "good" mics, and they are still some of my faves. The cardioid has a bit of a high end bump which sounds fab on vox, but it can be a bit harsh on drums sometime, to my ears. I usually use the omni position for drums. I still have a tiny RF problem with mine, depending ...
