I have a pair of modded 603's in use in my studio right now. Getting excellent tones on acoustic guitar, banjo, and mandolin. I've got several more expensive mics and the room, and these hold their own on acoustic sounds.

The ART VLA does sound pretty nice. I despise ART, however, for all the tube warmth marketing garbage. ART mic pres are garbage and have nothing do with classic tube stuff. At best they are novelty effects boxes. For it's price though, the VLA is probably the best, or one of the best stereo compress...

GooberNumber9/idealfreedistribution Well, humor me for a second here. Say I don't WANT warmth anymore. I want sizzle and whatever other qualities a tube mic may have. Are you saying a tube mic would not be worth having in anyone's locker if you are looking for a different characteristic than that w...

I'm seeking a bright sound with the obvious warm quality of a tube mic. It will mostly be used on vocals. I'm not going to get a ribbon because it provides a very different characteristic (I'm generalizing here, yes). That is on my next to-buy list, though. More than likely I'll get a Peluso ribbon...

I'm not going to give you the answer you want, but I think it's the truth: there isn't one "tube mic" sound. The suggestions listed above range from edgy and bright to rather dark. Remeber, there are solid state condensers, especially cheaper ones, that will do the same thing many tube mics can, and...

I have both the N72 and the JLM Baby Animals the JLM opamp and transformer. They are both definitely in the same family, but, I'll agree with their reputations in that the JLM has a more focused low end. The N72 has a bit more "character" in the bottom end, and can do cool tricks when pushed to dist...

Joel,

Have you used any of the new 610 pres (2-610, m610, solo 610)? If so, can you describe the difference between the new models and the original units (as best you can with words!)?

Sorry to hijack the thread.

Funny, I think those Stones records sound brutal, honest, and fantastic. Also, Andy Johns was engineering a lot of Stick Fingers and Exile on Main Street AND he also did of the Led Zeppelin catalog! Seems the same bozo was doing the mic placement and setting up the gear for both!

I'm not sure if I've ever heard of U47's used to mic the Beatles drums. I've always read the overhead with N. Smith engineering was most often a Coles ribbon, and with G. Emerick, an AKG D19. Like many have alluded to, there was a lot of attention paid to the sound of the drums themselves to get the...

An ART clock? Heck no. Unless the internal clock of your interface is horrible, even a good clock probably won't make much difference. An external ART clock will probably introduce more jitter to your system, making it sound worse.

I'd recommend buying almost ANYTHING but that.

If you want a new circuit, why do you want to replace the caps on the existing board?

The only bummer with you plans is that many of the parts for a Nuemann design are pretty hard to source and very expensive. The U67 is a possibility, but the amp design isn't considered this mic's strong suit (at least in many opinions). I could be wrong, but don't think Coles is known for anything ...
