There is a certain sonic quality to the older recordings that invite you in, rather that the more modern style where everything is just right in your face. Some of that, I think (I'm chasing it too!), is more about what you don't do - three compressors and a serate reverb on every shiny shiny instru...

It sounds to me like the weak link in your set up might be the programed drums. Maybe use them to build your tracks but then find a real drummer willing to come in and lay some real drums down for you.

I'm with Snarl...push it a little further in the direction that it's already heading. Maybe listen to something like Takk by Sigor Ros for inspiration? I hear a little bit of that kind of treatment. Really nice...

What about Raw Power by Iggy and the Stooges? People have bitched about that one forever and then Iggy goes in remixes it and actually made it worse! Also there are a lot of would be great records that someone needs to go in and scrape the 80s off of. Some early Kinks albums could have use a...

I'll put in another good word for the 603/4s. I'm certain there are many mics that would blow them away and reveal thier shortcomings in an A/B test, but I've never listened to the results I've gotten from them and thought they were in anyway unpleasant. I find them really useful and am in no hurry ...

The angelic chorus you hear accompanying the sound of the crickets is NOT a synthesizer or a chorus singing. It's the crickets themselves (slowed down) creating the effect Hmm, I'll need to perform a few cricket experiments myself, but at the moment I'm not imagining a varispeed or timestretched cr...

Micky Hart and Bill Kreutzmann from the Grateful Dead did some really cool stuff for the Apocalypse Now soundtrack. The project was called The Rythm Devils. The thing about Dbx's (I just know the 160's) is for better/worse they don't want to pump all that much. I mean you can get any compressor to do some unnatural stuff, but without attack and release times it seems the 160's tend to want to reduce pumpage for you. That's why I like em on bass, especi...
