Re: Drum overhead comparison in GJ setup
I see a lot of people posting their version of the Glynn Johns.... with no Front Mic? What gives? Mine has a front mic. The Sennheiser e602II about 18" or so from the front head. I was going for the pure 3 mics deal. I considered another LDC, but looked at the picture on GJ's book of the Benmont Te...

Re: Drum overhead comparison in GJ setup
Thanks for doing this!I just listened to the raw tracks so far. I like the Warm 87s as a nice balance, but I think my favorite is #6, the Weird 47/Nady combo. That sounds the most like "a record" to me. I've been doing augmented GJ pretty much exclusively with my band for our 4 albums so far, with s...

Re: Anybody bought anything from "Audiosavings"?
They have an "about us" that apparently isn't linked from the homepage: https://www.audiosavings.com/about-us/ And it's still pretty cagey. No address, no area code. Google autocompleted "Is Audiosavings legit?" They're also apparently on ebay, with a 98.4% positive over 700k transactions. Yeah, th...

Anybody bought anything from "Audiosavings"?
They've got something I'm looking to buy for like $170 less than everywhere else, which seems a little suspect to me, though tempting. Found a few old reviews online which were mixed. Just wondering if it's scammy or not...

Re: Cymbals/How far to go
It sounds like you only really need good hihats for now. If I'm understanding correctly. Personally, it's hard to really know how I'm going to like cymbals unless I'm there in person. I only really use hand hammered cymbals so more "production" cymbals may be more consistent and easier to just order...

Re: Cymbals/How far to go
i'm a 5B basher and have been cracking cymbals for much of the 25 years I've been playing. I kept a few that had sentimental value and recently sent two busted rides to a local cymbal maker to machine them down into a pair of 16" hihats. It was like $150 and well worth it to give some busted cymbal...

Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts
I hate it when someone has tried to pan or otherwise duplicate effect a single mono guitar part across the stereo field, sounds like my ears are in a vacuum. I have someone who will do this with his guitar parts, like 3 or 4 duplicate tracks. Just play it again, fool (it’s not complicated parts eit...

Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xeg3WOY7mW0 I love that show so much. So sad it's not on anymore... It's funny I never paid attention to the mix on that track because I just love how it functions in the end credits. I think it might not feel as aggro and in your face if it had what I would consider...

Re: ADVICE: send in my re20 or fix myself?
Thanks for the push to do the smart thing everyone. I think you're right about sending it in. I've got enough projects that I don't have time for on my plate as it is and this will almost certainly produce better results.

Re: ADVICE: send in my re20 or fix myself?
The rolloff switch doesn't do anything as far as I can tell, but the sound seems thinner than what a standard bass rolloff should be. Also, the volume is quite low. Have to crank the thing to hear anything.

Re: Anyone have experience w/ UA Combo Units?
I have an LA-610 (mk 1). It was the first "nice" preamp I ever bought after having it used on a remix session at another studio and loving the way it softened the top end on a very bright track. In general, it's a pretty dark unit, but if you already have experience with the solo 610 and like those ...

ADVICE: send in my re20 or fix myself?
Years ago I bought a used RE20 probably off eBay, probably for pretty cheap and it sounded like shit. Don't know why I didn't bother trying to return it but that's neither here nor there at this point. It's super thin sounding. No low end. The foam is disintegrated and gross, so I was considering ge...

Re: Going for it
My only other advice would be to be careful about how far apart you space the instruments. Bleed will act as ambience so the farther apart you space things the more roomy and distant the bleed will be. There's definitely been a couple times where I kicked myself because I was recording in a big spa...
