Re: tips for making a room not so live?

that's fine, but keep in mind that if you deaden certain freqs (highs) and not others (lows) then you change the balance of what you hear when mixing. that's one reason to consider hanging blankets just for tracking vocals and then taking them down, rather than using a treatment which won't help the...

Re: Question about "good" mics...

when alls i had were crap mics, i found myself putting the mic wherever the instrument was loudest. at the bridge of my cello, or the soundhole of the guitar. then i got better mics and found that the loudest part of the instrument wasn't necessarily the best sounding part. for guitar, the winning s...

Re: tips for making a room not so live?

yeah, if your main concern is tracking vocals, hanging blankets will do just fine. but they'll only deaden highs and some mids, so they won't help so much for critical listening (mixing) or for a full band.

Re: The Necessity of Compressors?

As for plugins versus hardware, I have the plugins in DP and an RNC. I can say they are both totally useful. The plugins are fine if you want mild, transparent treatment. More severe settings end up making things sound smaller and rarely get me what i want. The RNC is good for both mild and more ext...

Re: live sound dilemma - cello in rock act

Best: get a solid body electric cello. I have a zeta, which is great. the yamaha is good too. Good: get a bridge pickup. i have a fishman, it's fine, but there are better ones. you'll need a preamp to fix the impedance and low level of the signal, or maybe you'll find an amp that has the right chara...

Re: The Necessity of Compressors?

The COMPRESSION you add will bring things to the front of the mix OR will hold it steady in one place so it doesn't jump forward and back. To build on this... If the players are really skilled and disciplined and really play together, then no compression should be fine. (Maybe in mastering, but you...

Re: anyone ever record in boston?

I've had good experiences at Camp St. And i've heard good things about (and records from) Pete Weiss' Zippa and Dave Minehan's Wooly Mammoth. There are definitely loads of other people doing good work.

"free np": WTF?

i've been seeing this written on cars and stuff lately. "free np." i did a web search and all i could turn up was some silly online game thing called neopets, and they earn and trade neopoints, or "np". is that really what the fuss is about? and if so, then for god sakes why?

Re: Stereo Pair for Overheads, Acoustic, Vox.. adk or a-t?

When I got them, it was a toss up between those and the stapes. sadly my room is asssssssss so I stayed clear of the omnis. with closer mic placements, this really isn't a worry, and shouldn't prevent you from considering omnis. i say this not so much for you, as you've made your choice and are hap...

Re: pergot floors in live room?

I DO know that I was in a huge house that--unfortunately--was pergoted completely and the house just sounded like shit. And that was just a walk thru....nothing recorded or anything.....just the natural acoustics seemed really weird. I don't know anything about pergot, but in any case the house you...
