yeah, if your main concern is tracking vocals, hanging blankets will do just fine. but they'll only deaden highs and some mids, so they won't help so much for critical listening (mixing) or for a full band.

As for plugins versus hardware, I have the plugins in DP and an RNC. I can say they are both totally useful. The plugins are fine if you want mild, transparent treatment.
