Re: alesis dm5 for mixing?
I used to use it a lot. I would replace sounds with it sometimes. I would add it to existing sounds sometimes. I would record the data as MIDI tracks sometimes and use a couple of samples to layer with the snare track. PT has changed that so much though. Soundreplacer has pretty much put the DM5 in ...

Re: samson c-control
I was the one that brought it up before I think..... unless there is someone else just like me out there....
We ended up picking it up for the studio, and it's been very good so far.

Re: guitar practice amps
better than almost anything, including any other "practice amp" Vox, is the Vox pathfinder 15. Single 8" speaker. Solid State and it sounds amazing to my ears. It has a terrific Voxy overdrive and if you plug it into a 2X12" be prepared to be amazed. They go for less than $100 used, I paid $109 new....

Re: HOW OLD ARE YOU???
I guess I'm grampa around here. I'm 32. I've been engineering and producing since I was 19 in 1990, and before that, I was recording myself and my own band for many years. I didn't take any recording classes. I basically taught myself out of necessity.
And I've never, ever owned a 4-track.

Re: Stupid question: need pre for tube mic?
i have a rode ntk. . .it has it's own power supply, but even my preamp doesn't seem to be enough for it unless i turn on the pahntom power. . .anyone know if i'm supposed to? This seems very wrong. Phantom power should not increase the level of that mic. Maybe there's something wrong with your prea...

Re: Do you like your monitors?
I feel that you get used to monitors, for good or bad. Perfect example is NS10s. I'm of the camp that just refuses to work on them because they sound so bad to me, yet so many people love them and use them sucessfully. Not to mention that after a few hours of working on them. my ears start to get us...

Re: making this kick stand out in the mix...
sometimes when I have a hard time getting the kick not to fight the bass guitar, I flip one of them out of phase. All of a sudden I realize that they were cancelling eachother out.
Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't.
Phase is a nasty beast.

Re: Pain in the ass clients?
and that said, let me publicly thank anyone and everyone who has ever "done me a solid" over the years.... let a payment slip....gave me a discount.... let me pay for an amazing preamp over the span of a few months.... let me borrow something.... didn't make me feel stupid for not doing my mixes in ...

Re: Pain in the ass clients?
This probably belongs in the "gettin paid" thread, but I just wanted to say how annoying it is that some people consider what we do as a hobby, and that when we record them, we're just doing them a favor. The client that wants you to do $10,000 worth of work, but only has $100 to pay for it. Or the ...

Re: recording drums...when?
When you said: "you may find that you've got spots later that need accents that you didn't hit with the basic tracks. That's easier to fix than the alternative..." I suppose that fixing would basically mean punching in on parts that need to be fixed, correct? Well, i will often let the basic drum t...

Re: recording drums...when?
there is an argument for doing it or not doing it earlier or later. I prefer to do it first, but then you may find that you've got spots later that need accents that you didn't hit with the basic tracks. That's easier to fix than the alternative: Doing it later poses a HUGE problem, depending on the...

Re: Overhead Mics for Recording Drums?
Working in a room with a lower ceiling, I love using omnis for overheads. And not to sound like a broken record as well, I'm still using Stapes for that.
I also like U89s, and AT33as and CAD E-100s as overheads.

Re: Pain in the ass clients?
Some clients will always be a challenge but the hope is that one day, you can avoid assholes altogether. Here's the brief story of what I did. I worked out of a very cool demo studio for a few years. It had some cool gear, but was cheap. We squeezed some serious stuff out of the gear that we had and...
