If you want to spend way under $1000, I like the ART MPA Gold for a good, cheap dual preamp.

If you don't have an oscilloscope, you can use a pair of headphones as an alternative to follow signal through your tape machine. Ground the sleeve to your tape deck ground and use the tip as a probe. If you inject a strong signal into the machine, you should be able to hear it through the headphone...

All great tips; I've had the best results so far with a pair of figure eight condensers (with this particular singer). I'm sure other techniques will work better with different performers. Thanks again for everyone's input!
