My guess would be that permanently mounted internal mics would be mainly for live sound reinforcement. As BJohnson said, there are too many variables for recording. That said, I don't know how you would get a mic inside a tom without these mounting systems, so I guess I haven't told you much. Stephen

No, the R121 is a mono mic, but one "lobe" of the figure-eight pattern is brighter than the other. But this is only at a distance of 2 feet or less, so I don't think this could be the cause.
