The digimax FS will do what you're looking to accomplish. So will the behringer ada8000, the Alesis AI-3...there's also some Aphex 1/2 rack units and IIRC a fostex that will also do this on the cheap. No shortage of more expensive units that will do it too.

I use mono as a generic reality check, and often as a test for how much delay to put on a split signal. I'll ususally reduce the delay time after listening in mono.

BTW it's very cool that you even HAVE a varacoustic ribbon. Got it at an antiques store, for way less than it's worth, along with an Electro-voice V2 and a Sony C37p. The only tapes I recall having an issue with were Fuji consumer svhs tapes.

I used to use Maxell, TDK and quantegy on a regular basis, with no ill effects except for normal ADAT wonkiness.
