Re: octave drop as bass
It's not a good idea to use an octave effect on a guitar playing chords, it just turns to muck since the effect unit can't track multiple notes. Stick to single note lines.

Re: Dolby NR suggestions?
Thanks, I hadn't thought about 16 or 24 tracks being more susceptible to noise issues than 8. I'm liking this, sounds like I'll save some $!

Re: help understanding balanced and unbalanced inputs
Avoid base Hosa cables in the orange package. They're cheap but they're crummy and some places that's all they sell. I have one of these inserts and it needs replacing --- one of the mono/TS ends is dead. Even when it worked I could tell the difference between it and a better cable. .. Grab an "ins...

Re: Stephen Malkmus
The first half of the "Stephen Malkmus" album, "Wowwee Zowee" and "Crooked rain" by Pavement. I do like "Pig Lib", but that first solo album just kicked my ass. It was one of those moments where you think "Wow! Somebody else hears the music I hear in my head!"

Re: new TO issue
Er. Looking forward to the new issue, but "Two Tickets to Paradise" is a really freaking awful song. Aside from "I need a lover who won't drive me crazy" by John Crouton Mellenhead, it's probably my least favorite classic rock song ever. C'mon, that song (the Cougar one) cracks me up every time I h...

Re: Dolby NR suggestions?
So if I'm using 456 at +6 and make sure my signals in are quiet I shouldn't notice much noise? Any other tips for getting around using Dolby?

Re: Stephen Malkmus
I got to see part of Malkmus' set this summer opening for Radiohead and the guy pulls off all his fucked up guitar and vocal parts live as well. Truly talented guy. I've heard he can be a bit of an ass in person, but I've heard that about half of the musicians I like. His rambling, falling apart son...

Re: Stephen Malkmus
I think he has one of the truly individual voices out there, I'm not speaking vocally, but rather his style, sound etc. He is one of the most articulate songwriters around and his sense of humor is so intelligent. I see him as a thinking man's artist. He's got the John Lennon-kind of thing going whe...

Stephen Malkmus
What do you guys think of Steve Malkmus? I know a lot of people think the Pavement records sounded like shit, and they did (but I still love Wowee Zowee). I think his 2 solo records are fucking great! They sound good and his songwriting has never been better. I especially like the first, self titled...

Re: U2 (aka Bono vs. Toto)
U2=overrated.
way overrated. REM was better. (only half kidding). I say WAS because the one thing these two bands have in common is that they make shitty records of shitty songs these days. How can I work Toto in here?Hmmm.....Toto also sucks?

Dolby NR suggestions?
Hi, I'm putting together my first home studio, starting with a Otari 8 track. I'd like to know what you all think about how to add a Dolby unit to my system. What type of unit should I be looking for? Do I even want Dolby? All opinions/anecdotes/horror stories/ appreciated. Thanks.

Reusing tape?
I'm new to this, does anybody reuse open reel tape? I would never use it for any serious recording of course, but is it ok to use it for getting sounds, experimenting, etc? Is there a legit use for used tape? Also, can 1/2" tape be "erased" in some way to reuse or is it ok just to record over it?

WTB: Otari MX5050III 1/2" 8-track
Anyone who wants to unload one, please let me know. Prefer one in very good to excellent condition. FYI I live in Wisconsin USA, don't know practicality of overseas shipping on something that heavy. Thanks.
