yeah, that photo was for dramatic effect. My half is ok. The front room in the other half is ok too, but one you get into the kitchen/bedroom are it's pretty horrifying. One idea is to build a wall so that all you see is the front room and get that one in shape. Although as I'm putting plans togethe...

I totally agree with you, I just had my head in two different places on that post. I can assure you, I'm not that particular badass, there's a world's difference when I mix in a studio. I just have an obsession with building gear cause I have for fun soldering and wiring stuff up, which can get in t...

Thanks for the replies. What you're saying about working on my room makes sense. I don't have monitors yet cause I was thinking "why bother when I don't have the room set up for 'em?" I don't have the room set up because this building is falling apart and will be torn down in a year. It's pretty bad...

ITB to OTB
I've always had full access to a university or commercial studio, until I moved to rural MO to take care of my gramma. Because of that, I've never had more that a minimal amount of my own gear. I've got a G4 powerbook, new mac mini, mbox, logic, PT, 3 SM57s, Grado SR225s & drums, guitars, analog syn...

One time I was doing a multitrack of a blues band in a bar and I left the Drive for the HD24 at home... oops. I ended up doing it live to 2-track and ended up with a great recording. I used to work for a company that did CD on demand at music festivals, so I've mixed live to 2-track hundreds of time...

Well, I called him today and told him I didn't like his options and gave him mine, and he didn't seem to like that. I convinced him to let me fix it a song, so I'm doing that. I don't think it's right for him to demand his shit back at the end of a project after I put the work into it. Regardless of...

when someone backs out of a project
So, I've been working on this mixing project for a while. They had been praising me on the work I've been doing for a month. Half the tracks were getting mixed by another guy for this compilation. I just recently got all the mixes done. Tonight I got a call and they want the other guy to mix the son...

I remember these kids that came in to the studio, I was subbing for our other engineer who couldn't make it until later that night. My coworker reassured that that I was just as skilled as him. But they never did work with me so they came to the conclusion that I've never done audio work I guess? I ...

Of course you can mix on headphones! It's not ideal, but Sufjan did it, and since you'll only be there for 6 months, why not spend that $100 on a pair of Grado's that you can learn and love forever instead of some cheap speakers you'll be putting in an untreated room and then trying to get rid of? ...

cheap (but usable) monitors?
Unnecessary background info (can be skipped): I've been engineering professionally out of school for three years now. I just moved to rural NW Missouri to take care of grandma for the rest of the year, before I move to Portland to freelance. Until now, I've always had the keys to a professional fac...

Our bassist is the only one that uses deodorant, AND the drummer has a large mustache, which has been proven to consistently pick up women. It has to be a great mustache, not just any ol thing'll do. I usually wear pajama pants while engineering sessions, I like to be comfortable. All in the name of...
