That said, once you level the playing field for competence, you'll find that to a surprising degree, quality of work is not the most important factor in deciding income level among regular audio professionals. It might help get you in a door somewhere, but the guys I know that are doing wel...

Technical knowledge, while crucial, is one of the least important aspects of making a living in the world of audio production, particularly on the indie level. Least important aspects? There really isn't any sort of substitute for having chops in this gig. I mean, as long as you're a nice guy and w...

I heard Beck did all the vocals on Midnight Vultures this way, using an SM58. For real. Famously, all of Bono's vocals are done this way. Also, supposedly all the Sigur Ros stuff is done with the monitors cranked and Jonsi singing through the AMS RMX16. If you are paranoid about bleed, wire one spe...

I believe the 002R has both line and mic level inputs for 1-4. The mic ins are on XLR, and the line ins are on 1/4" jacks. Just use the front panel switches to choose line in. Not sure about the 002, though, since I don't use one. I mix on a console, so I just send the tracks out to the board and o...

Audiosweet, I've gotten in the habit when bringing signals back into a session to use channels 5 to 8 so I don't have to run my sound through those mic pres on channels 1-4 I have an old 002 that I use for editing and location recording and I do the exact same thing. Avoid the preamps helps TREMEND...

Re: Sends to outboard gear

While filtering out the low end can certainly be useful in many instances and for creative effect, it doesn't address a lot of issues you can come across when mixing. Coming at it from a musician's perspective, what happens when a guitarist has this massive low end on a really heavy part and they wa...

I just checked the Brent Averill site and I see that I now have another option. Do the B.A. 312 preamps sound different than traditional API pres since they have a different op-amp (Avedis 1122 op-amp instead of the traditional 2520 op-amp)? And will these preamps fit in an API lunch box? Seems lik...

i personally don't see how you could really even mix for 'the general public'....you'd just be trying to make everything sound how you ASSUME people want it to sound. meanwhile you have the band right there TELLING you to take the damn gated reverb off the snare... What makes you think that I would...

I think you're my soul mate!! just kidding.. I've said it before on here, and I'll say it again.. when producers stop pandering to the general public and start forcing consumers to accept that not all music should sound exactly alike, the general public will eventually accept it as a given. It's ca...

Quote: Also, these drums had to be quantized to make up for the drummer's uneven tempo. and in doing so, you added weird sounding digital clips that are arguably more distracting than a wobbly performance would be. Actually that is how the snare sounds in the original track. Its a miss hit and part...

i could argue 'what if the drummer would rather hear the sound of the drum like he played it, rather than the same gunshot every half a second' but we'd just go on and on forever, and put everyone to sleep. I hear you. In this instance, it is a production demo and the drummer really has zero to do ...

Bruce Sweiden over on the Gearslutz forum has people hanging on his every word, because he presents things in a relaxed, cool way and has the rep to back every syllable up. Just sayin' Not to knock Mr Swedien, but he has made some pretty opinionated statements on Gearslutz, most notably against com...
