What kind of close-mic'ing are you using? For ultimate "tightness" you will want spot mics. I am close micing all the other drums, as well as a room mic about 10 to 12 feet back. yeah, where I live is rather far away from what is considered "north portland" I am really close to the airport, overall portland is a rather safe city, well.. at least compared to a lot of places I have been.

I live in northeast(about 60th and fremont) the neighborhood is super chill, my house is about half the cost of similar houses in the "hip" areas. It is also not super far removed from downtown as its very close to some major streets. Hope that helps.

I just recapped one channel on a symetrix 525 I had, I put bypass caps on the caps in the signal path, as well as a few other tweaks. I think it sounds alot better than the other channel which is still stock.
