i recently picked up an sm81 and like it so far. haven't had a heck of a lot of time to experiment with placements and such, but so far i'm enjoying it. very natural sounding. really lets you know how good your guitar sounds in the room. can be really thick too. ribbons are great too, and i'm really...

Re: What things have you learned recently?

1. I've learned more about proper gain structure, to try and record to digital at around -18dBFS. I already understood this to a certain extent, but I would be tempted and be recording closer to -10dBFS or maybe even a little higher. It's amazing how much this simple thing has opened up my recordin...

i really dig her voice. one of the better singers to come around in some time IMO. her arrangements are great too. i don't like all of it ("1234" and a couple others don't do it for me), but much of it is cool. if someone forced me to listen to her sing for a long period of time, i wouldn't complain...

hamptone. hamptone. hamptone. (did i mention the hamptone?) seriously. save a little more. it's more than worth it. there's plenty of gain for ribbons. i have the 46c shinybox and i didn't realize how great it could sound until i tracked some ac./elec. guitar through the hamptone tube pre. the way t...

i just stopped over there to see if there was anything worth grabbing.... nothing great in the pro-audio dept. they had some decent deals on some monitors, but nothing you couldn't get by haggling a bit on any other day.

i got a big muff. it's rad.

i think this would make for a good sticky. then people can continue to post questions about other terms. it would be nice way of creating a reference for this kind of thing.

whatcha think :?:

i think the sum of all parts (instruments) coming at you from the same space can make a mix sound "pulled forward" and congested, so panning can be your friend. hearing sounds coming from all different directions creates a cool sense of depth. automated panning is fun to do to make sounds travel aro...

I was intrigued for a long time, and recently stumbled on a killer deal for a folcrom, so I took it thinking that if it was snake oil, I could resell it and probably make a few bucks doing so. I haven't had tons of time to mess around with it, but did pass through some mixes on it for a 4 song ep I...

they are all the rage now since people talk online about how a DAW mix doesn't sound as good as an analog one..it's total crap..recording is a cumulative process and how good it is the result of the people and how they use gear not the gear being used..a summing mixer is not going to make or break ...

Re: I'm halfway done

I removed the perforated metal shields along with their silk linings. Just have to install the foam and a new transformer. I tried it out last night with acoustic guitar and it has such a great pickup. I set it up about a foot away from my guitar and it's so sensitive and nice. A little boomy but t...
