don't be surprised if nothing works, the whole thing is chaos, and the musicians are mad at you. you might be spending 2 hours getting a perfect drum sound and be happy, or you might be spending 2 hours figuring out why track 1 won't record.

OH, i have a radio shack mic with spring reverb built in. its both awesome and useless.

319s can work out pretty well for many singers, can you audition one? you could save a lot of scratch...

if you had a time machine you could also try wacky willies either at their NW or SE location. of course, if you go all the way back to the SE location time, you could just go to radio shack...

exchange rate is not so great for this these days, but you can get a 441 from ebay.de for $300 USD or so.

hurm, something else that seems to be poorly understood in this thread is that the emphasis is on MODERN converters.

i am very sure that everyone's 90's digi gear in fact sucked. and when they upgraded to something manufactured 7 years later, they heard a decent improvement.

i think the design concept is to give some inertia to the transducer. keeps the quieter stuff out of the mic, allows you compress the kick without the fucking high hat coming through just as loud.

dude, its called a "budget". we don't all have $1000 to lay out there to get marginal improvement.

it puts perspective on the relative importance of converters in the audio chain.

i see a converter upgrade as something on par with like, upgrading transformers, upgrading cable. makes a measurable difference but for most people, its probably not important.
