Want the math? The shortest delay that the human ear can detect is 20ms (0.02 sec). It takes one nanosecond (1*10^-9 seconds) for an electron to travel 14 inches of cable. 0.000000001 seconds = 14 inches Multiply both sides by 20,000,000 0.020 seconds = 280,000,000 inches = 23,333,333 feet = 4419 mi...

The acids and chemicals left in the smoke, get deposited onto everything the smoke can get into, which means everything in the studio. These chemicals and acids will slowly eat away at everything they touch, especially if it is heated up, or is conducting electricity, as that will slowly keep activ...

(3rd time I had to write this - power failure during 1st time, 2nd time typed everything but forgot to login!!!) I'm a keyboard player who learned guitar as a 2nd instrument. I also grew up with a brother who played guitar. I didn't know it at the time but between him and the other guitarists I had ...

A lot of commercial releases have multiple reverbs in the mix. Most of the reverbs are short ambient reverbs, they don't sound obvious. I've been using this technique and my mixes come out a lot better.

The Dual Showman Reverb is the head version of the Twin Reverb. Exact same circuit, chassis, everything. And a lot cheaper than a TR. I also use it to experiment with speakers.

I rent a house and have put my studio in the basement. The basement is unfinished with fiberglass floor insulation overhead. Fiberglass "sheds" a lot of dust. I've lived in a lot of different places and this fiberglass dust is the worst I have dealt with. You can't just brush it off with a paintbrus...

Do not restore the MV control. You will lose tone. The MV is still intact on my Fender silverface amp but I can hear it lose tone when I drop it down so it stays at 10.

"Warmer and rounder" may mean a different horn. Saxophones are like guitars, switch to a different one and the sound changes. I worked with a sax player who wasn't happy with his tone, so he splurged $$$ for another horn and his tone got much better.

There are some things that processing can't fix.

Live or recording, HPFs are an underrated essential tool.

I find that crossovers make for good cheap effective HPF, LPF, or bandpass. Just put them in your inserts.

Between HPF and gating ringing toms/kicks, they really make a mix a lot better.

Use cassettes with the shortest time. The 90/100 minute cassettes use thinner tape than 60 minute, in order to squeeze all that tape into that little cartridge. The thinner tape wears out faster and is more likely to get eaten by the cassette transport. Stay away from generic no name cassettes. Use ...
