I lurk and answer more than I post new threads here. Recently got tired of (again) the really negative and overly opinionated faction of Gearslutz. There are a handful of knowledgeable people that hang out there, but you're about as likely to get some kind of useful advice out of anyone else there ...

I had the thought recently that it's possible that the necessary base of knowledge has been spread to the point where you don't need to ask questions so much as UTFSF. It seems illogical on the face of it, but the more I think about it, the more likely it seems. It's weird, though... I get the sense...

I'm sure Facebook has had sort of a soaking-off effect on a lot of these on-line forums. Not surprising considering the less linear method of communication, which is more natural and therefore more comfortable (but perhaps not as good for technical stuff).

I like it. To my ear, there's nothing obtrusively new-school about the recording.

Ashly PQX572

EXR EX2 Exciter.

I got no idea what I'm going to do with either... well, no specific idea, anyway... but I've got 'em and there they are.

To be frank, I'm not even sure what an EXR Exciter actually does. It's exciting to look at, I'll give it that.

Actually--I wasn't clear about this in my last post--the thing is, there was virtually NO money and NO support whatsoever for most of these bands. The majority opinion was that rock and roll was inherently evil, and of course the outsider minority didn't have any money. So while there was strong sup...

There was actually a pretty vibrant, underground of DIY Christian "alternative" music in the late '80s & early '90s--much of it fairly unique, most of it not preachy at all. Until the big labels got involved & tried to make everyone "Jesus things up" to boost profits (thereby killing the scene compl...

A little Ativan will fix that right up.

'Course, you probably wouldn't remember what you did, so it might be hard to reproduce.

Hey, sorry to be so slow responding. I didn't realize things were still happening here until just now. Thanks for giving the Bandcamp tunes a spin. The Judas Jetski "Camp" EP was mostly recorded on TSR8, with the drums being recorded to 3 tracks of a Tascam 424 Mk. II cassette deck (I was working fa...

Sure seems like it to me. Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about excessive wear unless I was planning to put the thing into constant, heavy use. My suspicion is that "they" are way too cautious for "their own" good. I've run 499 and 996 on my TSR8 on and off and nobody's died or anything... but...

Yeah, I had trouble with the highs. The 635a mics don't capture much of the highs, and the guitar amp had just... nothing but upper mids (I think it's an 8" speaker, so that's no surprise). The D-140e was the wrong mic for that application as well. I wanted to get digital drums for a long time, but ...

Well, the whole thing is cut from some pretty rough cloth, and was never intended to be otherwise. Normally there'd be a lot of cleaning up during the mastering process or whatever, but there wasn't really one of those this time around. If I were to try to make a more polished product out of this, I...

It Came From The Basement...

So we've begun recording band practices. We're using mic techniques which I picked up here on TapeOp, so I thought I'd post a link to the results. https://andysmash.bandcamp.com/album/it-came-from-the-basement-ep The room's a semi-treated basement which still also has to function as a basement. We'v...
