i just bought a lexicon pcm80. i am a lame as tape purist and only had a spring reverb as well. prior to the lexicon i had only heard cheap dig reverb and plug ins...all sound like fx not natural...but the lexicon really is nice on low settings it really adds depth and does not seem cheesy or eighti...

i think the mic has less to do with it....i think it comes from tube pres and tube compressors that are hit harder than they should be going to 15ips tape...then going through a great desk back down to a 2 track at 15ips again...add either plate reverb..spring reverb..double vocals (tape flange as w...

avensons are great but they are omnis which can lead to some phase issues when stereo micing. they sound best in an ortf configuration. if your room does not sound good you may want a mic with a cardioide pattern.
