Re: Check in Thread

I live in a sleepy part of Canada and have been personally unaffected. However, my daughter lives in the NYC area (Jersey side) and has gone out to a protest or two. I worry about the police and Covid 19. As other posters point out, Canada is not without stains on our national soul. The city I live ...

Re: Headphones for occasional mix reference

I use old AKG K240 DF in the studio and ATH M50 for location recording. In general, I think open-backed headphones have truer sound but if you like hyped bass go for closed back. The AKG K240 Mk II are not quite as good as the original Austrian-made ones, but still sound good at avery reasonable pri...

Re: Vinyl surface noise

You can't beat wet cleaning and vacuuming your vinyl with a machine like the VPI. The chemistry of the wash liquid is important too - detergent and/or surfactant and maybe a little alcohol plus a distilled water rinse - there are many recipes out there. You'll be amazed what a good record cleaning d...

Re: Digitizing Analog Songs, need suggestion on small, easy no screen options

You won't get any cheaper and easier than a simple USB interface (lots <$100) and Audacity (free!). If you can use a tape recorder, you can use Audacity, And with a small PCM recorder you are going to have to get the files on a computer to upload to Bandcamp...with the USB>Audacity method they are a...

Re: GS

I'm on there everyday, but I tend to hang out in the Remote Possibilities sub-forum and sometimes Geekslutz. A lot about location recording, mostly jazz and classical but some rock and R&B too. Its a pretty well-behaved lot there - mostly pro engineers and dedicated amateurs. I totally agree with th...

Re: Mackie 1604VLZ rehab as shelter in place project

Nothing beats the Caig Deoxit and Faderlube products IMO, but in times of pandemic anything will work. It is worth noting that with 'dampened' potentiometers and faders - the ones that have that 'smooth resistance' when adjusting - a lot of cleaners like CRC will dissolve and strip the lubricant tha...

Re: TASCAM 388 track 1 playback level inconsistent

There is a strong possibility that the idler arm is jumping around because of oxide or binder deposits in the tape path. First thing to try is a really thorough cleaning of all the tape path with a strong solvent (98% isopropyl alcohol or acetone, but don't get any on the pinch roller!) followed by ...

Re: The Cue Send On My 388 Is Mono Only

You can use any off the shelf headphone amp. You just have to wire your own feed cable so that hot signal is applied to the tip and sleave of the jack going into the headphone amp (so it ends up in both ears). Your feed will be mono but I've never had an issue with that when tracking. You mean hot ...

Re: Apollo Masters Burned Down

Why would I buy a physical CD from bandcamp when I can just download the files? I don't think there's very many people who care about the physical CD packaging the way people do with vinyl, which makes sense. If I'm buying vinyl I want the thing, if I'm buying a cd I just want the information that'...

Re: Apollo Masters Burned Down

I record a two-hour program every week for broadcast on the local community radio station. I have turntable, CD, cassette, and reel-to-reel available in the studio. CD and digital files from HDD or USB thumb drive are the most convenient. Vinyl continually pleases me; I enjoy it despite the backgrou...

I see you’re in Montreal. The Long and McQuade rental department is a huge resource for getting lots of mic options for little cash.

Also check out Studio Economik for rentals.

Re: repair 414 headbasket

Without seeing it I can only speculate, but if you don't want to swap your guts into a new frame what about a repair using an epoxy like JBWeld? The basket on the 414 is very important for RFI suppression so make sure electrical continuity is maintained...

Re: Need help with U87 XLR jack repair

Normally I would but it's 3 small solder points on a jack - not rocket science! Exactly. No Biggie. But if you are not familiar with prepping and soldering small gauge stranded wire, buy a spool of 24AWG at you local electronics store and practice on it until you are comfortable enough to tackle He...
