I have to wonder, given today's PA equipment, how much smaller a packege this could be done in and deliver an equivalent overall SPL? I'm sure a modern PA (with many crucial developments designed by those in the Dead family) could easily blow the Wall away from an SPL and size standpoint. But the k...

Here's way more info than you want on those mics...this is from a pretty detailed article about the whole 1974 Wall of Sound system. (http://dozin.com/wallofsound/index.html) The vocals usually never sounded too hot, but when all the Wall's cylinders were firing (rarely) apparently it was the best l...

Another good trick for tight doubling is not to sing s' or hard consonants at the end of words when you sing the double. That way you don't hear multiple cutoffs. Example: (and I use this one 'cause it's the track I was singing when I learned it) in "Every Day I write the book" If you're doing the ...

My early attempts at vocal doubling also ended up with some wanky phased out artifacts. Do you have both vocal tracks at the same level? I found that bringing the second vocal track down just a little bit helped eliminate the phase weirdness a whole lot, yet the "fattening" doubling effect was still...

I think this is the thing that can block phantom power for your ribbons: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DPowerPlug/ It may also improve your signal... but I'm always suspect of adding circuitry between your mic and mic pre. The quality of whatever is inside this little barrel could change t...

It's really, REALLY spooky that you just started this thread because I just logged in to ask virtually the same question...Man, this place creeps me out sometimes... Well, I'll amend your question with my own concern-If phantom does in fact damage ribbons(I've got an apex 210 on the way), is...

Just had a great (read:horrible) idea in the shower--if we're way close micing everything, why don't we take it one step further...has anyone here put a piezo/contact pickup directly on a drum head? I'd be very interested to hear that. It'd probably sound like ass, but maybe cool ass. I should showe...

yeah I've got a 22x17 kick (Yamaha Stage Custom Standard), not quite the monster deep Tama bass, and currently both heads on all of my toms...time to alleviate that problem, haha...But really you all have some really great ideas and I hope I can find the time to implement them. That and the mics, go...

Leigh I think you just blew my mind...I definitely have to try that. This is probably worthy of an entirely different thread, but how could I go about doing that gating trick in Cubase SX/Waves? I haven't figured out yet how to do ducking/sidechaining/keying and things of that sort. Thanks for the s...

'70s drum sounds?
I've been really into that too-clean, super-separated drum sound I keep hearing especially on records from the 70s. Of course now that I want to talk about it I can't think of the best examples...but right now I'm thinking Zappa(Apostrophe', Over-Nite Sensation), Pink Floyd (Dark Side, Animals), and...
