I've been listening to the Beatles lately and lots of their stuff has the bass hard-panned (not that I can think of any examples right now; I blame it on jet-lag).

NastyVCS vst channel strip

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but Bootsie's released his new free channel strip. I haven't tried it yet but his stuff is usually pretty nice. http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/2010/05/07/nastyvcs-released-today/#more-1429 I'm away from my studio for a few weeks but I'd be curiou...

Too late, analogue rules!!! I mean, digital rules!!! Damn, now I'm confused; which one is better again?

Stillwell just updated 1973 and gave the mid-band two new "Q" settings. Even more awesome than before.

Speaking of Peavey sleepers, the 520i and 520TN are really nice large diaphragm dynamics that are up there with the RE20 and SM7B (IMHO). I don't think they've been made for awhile but sometimes they come up cheap used.

I think that's a tad high, but if the preamps are in great shape I'd probably go for it. I owned one of those and I really love the sound of the pres; I really wish I still had them.

Probably part talent and part the low volume thing. AND you seem to know how to get sounds you like in the tracking stages and that is HUGE. +1 Realizing that I needed to spend way more time getting good sounds to disc (wish I could say "tape") was a major step in my recording progress. It's nice t...

Probably the Apex 205; it was the first ribbon I'd ever tried and it was kind of a "oh, THAT'S how you get that sound" moment. I've since modded a few and think they sound great.

Yeah, I know it's a dynamic; that was to demonstrate my retardedness

After all my searching and listening I decided that there wasn't a condenser in my price range that I'd be happy with so I thought I'd add another flavour dynamic instead. Guess I'll keep saving up for that U47...

Okay, here's an insight into how scattered and retarded I am; after bugging everyone for advice and spending hours reading reviews and listening to audio samples on the web in my quest for an affordable condenser I made my purchase this morning.

A Heil PR30.

Hey, thanks for that. I think you've swayed me to bide my time and try and find a used Oktava; then I'll have a decent mic and can always mod it down the road. Now for my next question; where can I get a compressor that sounds like an LA2A for under $150?

Just kidding...

i believe that the nevermind reference that calls on the the beatles reference is actually referring to artificial double tracking, where they would double the original vocal by dumping it to a different tape machine and back again (beatles aficionados please correct me if i'm wrong) there's some g...

So you are actually using the little instrument icons in Reaper...I admit I have been tempted...but I prefer the clean look. Also it would drive me batshit that the mic icon doesn't look like the particular mic I was tracking through...same with the guitars. I probably use PSP plugs in every song. ...

Thanks again for taking time to give suggestions to an exhausted topic. I've narrowed down my search to these: 2 Kel HM1s 1 Kel HM-7U 1 CAD M9 1 SE2200A Buying a mic is kind of a guessing game these days as I have to mail order everything and most companies won't let you return mics now due to "hygi...
