Re: Wye Oak feature

Been trying to mix my latest effort and comparing the mixes to 'Civilian' really bums me out. Who produced it? Who engineered it? I bought the record as a download from Merge, so i don't have any liner notes. It was produced by the band, engineered with Chris & Mickey Freeland, and mixed with John ...

Ha, just realized I misinterpreted the original column to mean only the exact same signal in both speakers, meaning they'd cancel out completely ... (That's why I'd discounted the possibility of multiple mics on one source being the culprit, because obviously those signals would never be exactly the...

"massive phase errors"

I just read Larry's Welcome column in the new issue (#83), and I'm trying to figure out how/why this "180 degrees out of phase" issue would happen so often. I'm sure it's just a failure of imagination on my part, but I can't think of a situation in which I would accidentally have the exact same sign...

I'm flying internationally in a few weeks, planning to carry on my cymbals. Have any of you drummers had experience with that? I'm envisioning scenarios in which they claim they could be used as weapons...

I chose tape for my next label endeavor because I can control all aspects of production, from the duplication, labeling, packaging, and so forth. I can press small runs of releases (100-200 copies) at a low cost, which enables me to put out a lot more music without worrying about having to recoup. ...

I've found -- both as a recording engineer and in my day job as a graphic designer -- that it's sometimes quicker to just try the "bad idea" than it is to explain why I think it's a bad idea. Sometimes I'm wrong and it actually works. But if I'm not wrong, and it really was a bad idea, we now have s...

New solo record! Cassette 8-track/digital hybrid

Hi fellow TOMB-ers: Last year I posted about a record I made entirely on a cassette 8-track (Tascam 488)... Well, I made another one, also at home, but this time it's a hybrid of 488 and Pro Tools. Still performed and recorded all by my lonesome. I'm really proud of the songs and the recordings! If ...

Me too -- I get a lot of ideas this way for harmonies or additional instruments to add.

Re: Just busted out the 'ol Portastudio

My Tascam Portastudio 414 has been out of commission for a long time due to a bad ac adapter. I had the same problem befall mine a few years ago. I looked around for a replacement adapter, but ended up finding a Tascam 488 8-track for the same amount of money just a new adapter for the 414 would ha...
