YES!!!!!
The crotch mic rules! I use a EV 635a just above the beater side rim of the kick. I usualy use a Ross distortion pedal or a Rat as the pre for this mic. If you sneak it into the mix it makes the drums pop.
It doesn't work for every drummer but neither does the Glyn Johns set up.

I'd do a Glyn Johns set up. One overhead above the snare (panned R), a mic by the floor tom pointed towards the snare (panned L), and a mic out front of the kick. Add a snare mic and your off to the races.
If the room is good I'd use ribbons for everything except the snare.

I have sone of the Apex versions (it's the same mic rebranded). Mine are the smaller ones but I've used both. They're really nice on horns and even better on drums. I've been using them in a Glyn Johns set-up on a 60's Gretch kit and they sound awesome. The kick sound is the best I've ever got.

Off topic but does anyone know how to fix these things? I've got the Keybass and I just can't get it to stay on tune. I'll get 4 or 5 notes tuned and when I tune the 6th it knocks the others out.

I've done it with an AKG mini condensor - one of the clip on/goose neck drum mics. It sounded OK. It would be great live in conjunction with a pick-up. I used it for a singer songwriter record. The guitar player can't stand still so it was the best solution. It wouldn't be my first choice fopr recor...

Awesome again. Thanks. I'm in the UK away from home with 2 new (to me) mics in my luggage and no way to try them out and I though "hey maybe someone on the Tape-op board has some info on these mics, like when they where made or a link to an owners manual, or whether they're Hi-Z or Low-Z or switchab...

MD 411

I just picked up a matching pair of Sennhieser MD 411's with tripod stand and leather cases on vacation in England. Does anyone know where I can find info on these mics? I've done a search but can't seem to find much.

Tube amps run at very high voltage - enough to kill you dead a few times Amps can kill you, but they do it with current, not voltage. It sounds like the contacts to the power tubes are shakey. Unplug, de-oxit, check solder connections, rattle it, and try again. Good luck. Current, voltage, what-eve...

For god sakes make sure it's unplugged before you spray anything on anything. Tube amps run at very high voltage - enough to kill you dead a few times - they can also store voltage after they are unplugged. If you don't know what your doing take it to someone who does. If the tubes are 30+ years old...

I'd advise buying a used van over renting. My band did so last year before a Canadian tour. Rental and milage charges were going to be more than the cost of buying a used van (mind you Canada is fucking huge). I'm sure for your trip renting will be cheaper than buying but buying is almost always a b...

Generally what goes in is what comes out. A tele sounds like a tele etc etc. The only variable is how hot the signal is going from tape (or computer) to the amp. You'll also need a re-amp box of some kind. Do a search. There's a very easy and cheap to build reamp schematic floating around on the net.

Do a search. There's lots of good info here for 38 owners. I had one for years and was nothing but happy with it. They sound great (when set up right) and can be more or less hasle free for an anolog deck. They're unballanced rca in/outs at -10db. If you want to get clean recordings you should set b...

I've had life long problems with my right ear. It's probably only thanks to my ENT that I'm not totaly deaf. Do what he says. It'll be fine. I've had my ear drum reconstructed, lanced and had tubes put in and I can still just fine. The only trouble I have with my hearing is all self inflicted (too m...
