Re: The worst mistake you made when you were new to this...

Back in the early 90's I got an insurance settlement for nearly $30k. I immediately went out and bought two of the first blackface ADAT's (WoW, the Latest Thing!), a Soundcraft Spirit board, a Sony DAT deck, some mid-level mics, a couple Aphex Expressors, a Roland R-880 reverb, and a couple other od...

Re: protools 002 vs control 24

It's merely a controller w/mic pre's, no software. Minimum you'd need if you went PT|Mix would be a used Core card (about $2k) and a used 888|24 8 channel I/O interface (about $1.2k), a host computer, and all the necessary cables. And that would be a bare-bones system; most people would want to add ...

Re: Nilsson Schmilsson, what in the holy fuck???

My favorite Nilsson/Lennon Lost Weekend story was the one where they were in this restaurant/bar in LA, getting very obnoxious and inebriated. Lennon places a Kotex on his head. Finally, a waitress comes up to them and threatens to throw them out if they don't cool their jets. Lennon says to her, "D...

Re: How Does One Sync an Analog Tape Multitrack to a DAW?

The sync'ing of analog tape and DAW or MDM is fraught with issues and is a series of compromises. In the best of cases it can work well, but when you're on the clock and working with a sync situation in tracking mode, beware of the countless times it has killed a vibe because of some sync malfunctio...

Re: enough about gear: how bout PREPRODUCTION?

The amount of pre-pro varies from project to project, but there is always an element of it in my work. A lot of times, the arrangement needs to be tweaked in pre-pro to make a song work. After that point, we'll usually do a click track or other tempo map and rough some stuff in as a go-by. It's amaz...

Re: what happened to the Brent Averill API pres?

Hmmm. Nobody mentioned the API 3124 in this thread. They're still making 'em! Although you have to buy them 4 channels at a time.

The 3124M is doubly handy, as it serves as a 4-channel submixer as well as 4 discrete mic pre's.
