Re: RANT: "in your spare time.."
None of us have spare time. My "by the way" tasks usually cost $25+ per. Below if from my $250 per song mix deals: Extra Fees: Mixing that needs to be completed by a fixed date will be subject to extra “rush” charge of $75 per song. Extracting tracks from GarageBand or Logic is $50 per song. Extract...

Re: Differences in monitoring: mix rooms vs mastering suites
I'll have to try this speaker/wall thing in my home office studio I guess. It goes against all the "perceived wisdom" dumped on us for years, but I find this happens now and then. At least I never stuck egg cartons on my walls.

Re: Differences in monitoring: mix rooms vs mastering suites
Why do people keep saying put the monitors up against the wall? This has always caused extreme bass buildup when I've been to fix people's home studios. Plus you'd need around 7 feet deep of 703 to choke down low end in a room. Please remember that. Resonant bass traps take up less space.

Re: Truth time- incredibly dumb things you did when you didn't know any better
Thanks all! Really, if I'd wanted to be a known recording engineer, starting this magazine eclipsed all that. It's sucked up 1/2 my time and confused people as to what I "really" do. But.... I'm certainly at a higher profile than I would have been. Trade off....

Listen to records, and think, "Is that really the right reverb?" Steve has opinions. I have opinions. I'm sure you have opinions. Feel free to act on them with audio.

Re: A polite linux request
I wish it was an adopted platform for music production but I just don't see it happening - I've been waiting 25 years. We write about what is in front of us; Linux rarely pops up. If there was a large interest we would cover it in reviews, but I'm not about to do a big article about how great it is ...

Re: Chairs?
We have the Herman Miller Embody chair at Jackpot. I thought we paid $700 for it years ago, prices look scary now! It's got really really good lower back support and it changed my life. So much more comfortable.

Re: EQ in line of speaker cables?
"I had them installed near the room corners with the angle of the speakers facing the corners" if I'm not mistaken, this would likely introduce comb filtering/phase cancellation and would affect lower frequency energy more than high end...

Re: Pro Tools HDX not Bouncing all Tracks to Disk!
Couldn't do one print and cut it up as every song was it's own PT session - they needed that kind of care. Good thing is client signed off on first pass! I FOUND OUT THE ISSUE FOR SURE: Avid's Pro Multiband Splitter plug-in will not work in Bounce To Disk when in DSP mode. Native mode totally worked.

Re: Pro Tools HDX not Bouncing all Tracks to Disk!
I get Nick's idea for mixing, and I have done that and of course do that with console mixing. But for projects of this scope it would add untold hours. Although in this case it would have saved hours. But generally BTD should work... it's supposed to. Been changing each session to Native only and al...
