Re: my 002 is conked, help
i just had one of those damn things totally fail on me in the weirdest way, i'd been mixing for 2 evenings and then two full days, and at the end, on the last goddamn song, i started hearing some distortion on the vocal, in the software i solo'ed it, it went away, i muted it, it went away, i put th...

Re: Isolating the Snare out of a Stereo Drum Track
I did what you suggested, professor, and to my delight I was quite pleased with the results. I actually wanted to open up the high end of the kit a bit, as well as getting mix flexibility with the snare, so I copied the (mono) drum track, low & hi-passed it as per your frequency suggestions, then mi...

Re: Isolating the Snare out of a Stereo Drum Track
I know it's a tricky business, this. I was hoping to avoid any kind of triggering, for multiple reasons. Ironicly, I already tried your second suggestion, but I didn't do it in order to create more snare. I did it to add more of a room sound to the drum tracks. I'll give it another shot with manipul...

Isolating the Snare out of a Stereo Drum Track
I'm mixing a bunch o'tunes that have stereo drum tracks, so I'm limited in my mixing flexibility. The tracks are reasonably well recorded, but I really need to be able to have a free snare track. If I eq and fader the drum tracks so that the bass drum is killer, I kinda lose the pop & crackle of the...

Re: Otari MX5050's analog ins. Am I an idiot?
I had the same prob with my Otari 5050 8 track, and it was in fact the 3 pin hot thingy. As for recording into the deck, you'll need a pre amp of sorts -- a board or a, well, pre amp -- in order to get the signal to proper strength...

Reel-to-Reel alignment in DC area...?
Anyone have any experience with aligning tape decks in the Washington DC area? Who's best to go to & where, for example? I have a Tascam 2-22 that I'm about to install new heads onto. It will consequently need an alignment... (as does the head upon my shoulders... need an alignment, that is...)

Mono drums rock! (& roll)
Stick 'em square in the middle o'the mix: Clears up space for other, less db-enhanced items to exist happily. White Stripes do this to great effect. And Meg's drums sound BBIIIIIGGGG...

Re: Adding analog to digital
Thanks, MSE... I appreciate the input. My drums are stereo files, though, so I guess don't slam 'em? How about vocals & geetars? Slam 'em?

Re: Mastering at +5.....
The cool thing about way too much compression and mastering at stupid volumes is that it really, really hurts your ears in headphones. This is how I figured out my band's CD was being compressed to death. I put on the headphones for a relaxing bedtime listen, and had to pull 'em off my head after a...

Re: The New Cure album
I think the songs themselves are the best batch of Cure songs in ages, but I find it literally painful to listen to. When I first get a new CD i pop it in my car stereo and crank it up as loud as I can take it. By the third song I had it turned almost totally off becuase of the excruciating pain my...

Re: Adding analog to digital
anyway...awhile back i got a song in to mix, it had all been recorded on adats. it was pretty well recorded but there was just no love. i ran basically everything out to tape and back and it really really helped A LOT. everything congealed together better and basically just sounded a lot friendlier...

Re: Mixing Board Question
Check this out: http://www.toaelectronics.com/disc/manuals/RX-208_212_216.pdf According to the manual, you can take an output signal from the effects insert, using TRS jacks. However, it appears as if you'd be bypassing the eq section by doing so, nullifying one big reason for using a board for trac...

Re: Adding analog to digital
JES... Your machine needs to a have a repro head. As your tracking, the signal hits tape through the record head, then is read -- milliseconds later -- by the repro head. The signal is then sent into your DAW. There will be a bit of a delay, but it'll be consistent throughout the track, so realignin...

Re: Adding analog to digital
Interesting... I've heard from a lot fo folks that an analog board can impart a highly desireable quality to a mix: I've heard the terms openess and clarity thrown about. This was part of the plan as much as the Otari was. But you guys seem to be saying that the opposite is true? Now I'm totally con...
