Re: Tape Plugins

UAD ATR 102. Use to mixdown to a real one, and when this came out I was skeptical. But, once you calibrate it, it sounds really good. Because it is digital, it behaves differently than the real machine. You have to get used to hitting it differently, mix into it differently. Pretend you need "x" am...

Re: Tape Plugins

I don't really consider Spectre a 'tape' plugin, but it's certainly very cool and useful. Ya, you're right. I bought it recently, so it was floating around the back of my head. for what use? I like SLATE VTM on the mix buss but use KRAMER on drums and for texturizing things or for slap echo etc... ...

Tape Plugins

What's your favorite tape plugin? I've been demoing them, and there are a decent amount of goods ones that are tough to pick out when comparing. Has anyone tried the IK Tape Collection? I haven't spent much time with it, but from the little I have heard I'd place it high on the list. It's on sale ri...

Re: Acoustic Space Simulator Reverb Plugins

I recently picked up the UAD Capitol Chambers (another room simulation) and it's pretty cool too but uses a lot of DSP and is kind of slow to tweak - every time you change a parameter it has to "think" (i.e., the door is open - if you have it you'll understand...). But sounds really nice. Ya, I've ...

Acoustic Space Simulator Reverb Plugins

I've been looking at alot of different Reverbs for my next plugin and feel kind of overwhelmed at the endless choices. Just when I thought I had narrowed it down, I read about Reverbs that model an Acoustic Space, like UAD Oceanway and Eventide TVerb. Not only would this style be the perfect complim...

Re: Gain Staging - Tracking/Mixing

Thanks for all the replies. The biggest issue I'm having is with a Lehle Sunday Driver. I'm using it with my guitar going into an Amp Sim, Helix Native. When the level is down all the way on the Lehle, I get clipping when strumming hard. When use the -20db pad on my UA Apollo (1st gen Silverface), t...

Gain Staging - Tracking/Mixing

I've gone thru a decent amount of material on gain staging, but still have a few questions.. From my understanding, the level of each individual track should be -18dbFs. Does this mean that should be the recording level? The size of the waveform I get, when tracking at -18, is significantly smaller ...

Mic Parts S-12 and T-12 Mics

Anyone have any experience with those two? I read a comparison between the 12 and 47 capsules that said you can make the 12 sound like the 47 (in the same Mic Parts model Mic) with a simple Eq while mixing. I was curious if the same can be said about the transformer in the T series...maybe not just ...

Re: Best Monitors for the Room

That depends on what your best definition of "best" is. Yeah, you want less colored vs. more colored, more flat than not, but don't get something you can't stand, unless you think it's best. Eh, for yer purpose. NS10's are the archetypal "bad" sounding speakers that a lot of people have written the...

Listen to the ones that you LOVE. The ones that sound best to YOUR ears. Those are the pair you should buy.
I thought that a monitor with a flat freq range won't necessarily sound the best, like compared to a colored one.

Re: Best Monitors for the Room

So, go listen to at least 6-10 different pairs of monitors, then make a choice, buy them, and then start listening in your room BEFORE doing anything else. As you learn the deficiencies of your room, before treatment, you'll more easily fix stuff. Instead of "fixing" stuff you cannot hear on headph...

Re: Best Monitors for the Room

A fancy pair of headphones could be your other way to get a second opinion. Focal and Beyerdynamic both have some highly regarded, mixing quality headphones. But they might be about as pricey as one of your new monitors. Has anyone tried mixing a song entirely on a pair of "mixing quality" headphon...

Re: Best Monitors for the Room

If I were you: I would focus on fixing what DOES NOT work currently with what you have. I don't have monitors, just Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones and the Reference 4 software.. and I'm pretty sure that the 280s aren't even good enough for referencing the low end. There not even closed backed.

Re: Best Monitors for the Room

I'd consider perhaps a smaller speaker size (maybe a pair of 4-5" ones) coupled with a sub you can turn off/on, or a high quality pair of headphones so you can check bass when needed, but aren't constantly flooding a tight space with more low frequencies than you can get an accurate read on. I've n...
