It's weird, if you search Toca on All Music, a world band comes up- not this band from Los Angeles. It's incredible to me that EQ would even bother to write an article on this. AMG has really strong credibility dealing with 'legitimate', 'distributed' releases. 15 years ago, there would be a signif...

I'm not sure what you mean by "Orange County" but the guys in this band are mostly from the "rougher" parts of LA. We actually did most of the mixing in Inglewood which is far from the culture of Orange County. In terms of the production, the artists involved had been working with this material for ...

Colin, do you view yourself as a producer or engineer?
Jeff,
Thank you for taking an interest! :D

I'm trying to come up with that big modern kick drum sound...the punch. EQ is certainly a huge part of that, but you can't get how to do it from a forum. Like playing an instrument, it takes practice and experience to figure out how to EQ a bass drum to make it sound like another bass drum. The "pu...

Be a really good live band ." I believe that for musicians this is the only way to really do something great. I've said it before: forty years after Sgt. Pepper's and over fifty years after the advent of tape music, and we're still thinking of music just in terms of live bands ? How incredibly limi...

amateur in the root Latin means, "lover." There is no need to hate on amateurs. Exactly. An amateur is someone that does something merely for the "love of it" rather than for money. There is no shame in that. I think with recording, in particular, its a very interesting time period that I actually ...

for the professed PT user - try sound replacer.
Or just tab to transient and drop in a sample.

Or, if you want to do it faster:
beat detective to chop the regions at the transients then tab to region to drop in the samples.

Oops. Sorry man, didn't mean for my tone to come across that way... I intended to seem like I was poking fun at myself more than lecturing anyone else. I guess it didn't come across the way I intended.
No problem. It just seemed like you were saying that I was vain.

Don't get offended. You and I are pretty small potatoes in the scheme of things. Don't take yourself too seriously! If Allmusic made me look important, or immediately got to all of my corrections, I wouldn't trust them for a minute! Instead of listing dozens and dozens of records I worked on that n...

The main offenders are "smart phones" like blackberrys. They transmit in pulses in order to get around the FCC and have a more powerful signal. There isn't much you can do about it. For mics, if you have something that has a tranny, that should protect it. You need lots of shielding. SM57s are usual...

If you can't re-record: Just notch out the nasty sounds on the ride. It is a BAD sounding ride (sorry) so its going to need some EQ no matter what... De-ess it. Try placing in some samples. Etc, etc... There is always something that can be done to salvage this sort of thing. Usually its just lots of...

Man, Allmusic has been pretty much dead wrong for every record I have worked on that is listed on there. I have no idea how that works. I've emailed the corrections like 50 times but to no avail...

So anyways, I say, "don't trust it!"

Meriphew wrote:Congrats Colin. Were you really using two R88's as overheads, or was that a misprint (perhaps two R84's)?
Thank you. Yes, it was actually a misprint. It was just a single R88 but a few other songs were a pair of the Wunder C12s. I like the R88 much better though. Its a fantastic microphone!
