Position the mic so the rear faces the ride cymbal. You will get better rejection of that leakage.

I've worked with lead singing drummers since 1970. I found a few things that work out great. Avoid any condenser vocal mics like Neumann 105's or my fave, the AKG 535. Those will pick up way too much cymbal leakage. An older SM58 Unidyne III always works and sounds great, even for album recording. N...

I don't do mix buss EQ here, EQ is applied locally to tracks only. These are used for complex fixin'. Occassionally I get a turkey track that needs some "corrction". These will do that. General gentle EQ is applied with the analog console EQ here. I also have a DOD R-831 31 band graphic. This one is...

I have a couple here, 15 and 31 band. I rebuilt them with new opamps, filter caps and a new power supply. They are excellent and are very high quality.

Mine are direct coupled, no caps. They can create complex EQ curves a parametric won't because you will eventually run out of bands.

The 1969 Sola Colorsound 3 knob has a great tone control. It's more like a "tilt" control, less tops, more bass to the left, more tops, less bass towards the right. It's basically a Fuzz Face germanium with an input buffer (predictability) and that tone knob. Any fuzz can have that tone knob incorpo...

I built a bunch of classics instead. Most of these newer boxes are copies in one way or another. The Fuzz Face isn't used much but the Colorsound "Page" model is. The old Foxx Tone machine does the best octave split. Built a Meyer fuzz, etc. Best part is I used to own some of those back when I was a...

With a nearly total blackout of specs, seems most audio stuff is based on jive.

The "I got a box that can make you sound better than you really are" sort of crap does get old after a while. I miss the pro's in this biz.

I'm more of a RE-20 guy. I like the wider frequency response, the flat curves and the lack of proximity effect. A SM-57 with the internal transformer removed does have SM-7 qualities, especially in the low end that is missing from the SM-57 stock. Through a fast SS mic preamp the RE-20 does exhibit ...

It's a bipolar el cap. I left mine in. You could replace it with a MIT or InfiniCap but that would cost as much as the speakers. The bypass cap lets the transients through.

Use a .01 uf polystyrene or polyprop film cap, any good brand will do. Use 250 volts or more.

I've been using the Parts Express Dayton Audio B-652-AIR 6 1/2" two way speakers here. They have the AMT ribbon tweeter, amazing. I did add bypass caps to the tweeter in the crossover. Truly hi-fi for less. They are passive so use a good power amp, I use the Adcom GFA535.
Price: $59 per pair.

2N3819's are rather old devices, not that quiet compared to newer offerings. You can sub in (or design around) a Linear Systems LSK389 for a matched jfet pair (saves the labor matching JFET's). They are also much lower in noise, about 1 nv/hz/sq. If lower input capacitance is wanted, they also make ...

Nice kit. I notice the piezo is a larger 25 mm jobby, those have a resonance below 6 khz, rather peaky and electric sounding.

Digi key sells a small 12 mm 9k hz resonance piezo disc that may have a more natural sounding, wider bandwidth.
