Re: so Uqbar, you wanted a Meters thread?

Also, it seems that MMW is The Meters of the current generation.... Who is MMW? I love that 'second line' feel others have mentioned. There's a compilation of Indian (among others) marching band type stuff called "Frozen Brass" that's amazing. I also like the funeral dirge sound to Albert Ayler's s...

Re: analog board fronting a digital setup...and more.

It depends upon the board. I have an old soundcraft that I use. Originally I needed it for the phantom power, but once I had other options I found I would drag out this old board periodicaly for the character of the preamps. Adding good pres to your chain definately will help your sound. Especially ...

Re: My thoughts on da Meters

The thing I love about the meters is the economy of playing, and the UNDERPRODUCTION of their songs! If you listen to the Josie records there are lots of little noises you'd never hear in these days of hyperperfection - for example the kick drum pedal squeeks on each beat. All this actually adds to...

Re: the meaning of 2001:a space odyssey

The movie seems so mysterious - then you read the book and it all makes sense. It's actually better when it makes no sense.

This and the Shining are two examples of movies that are better than the book...

Re: I want to admit something

What gets me are Bartman Democrats that blame Nader for their loss. They had a weak candidate (who actually won) and then the Republicans stole the election through foul play. How in hells name do they get off assuming that Nader voters are Democrats or that we should have voted for your candidate? ...

Re: finding a cheap oscilloscope

I purchased new probes (and received advice) for my old ebay procured Tek scope from Stan Griffiths. His info is on this page:
http://www.repairfaq.org/REPAIR/F_Manuals.html

I think I paid like $45 for my scope and nearly as much for probes, manuals, cleaning supplies, etc...

Re: so Uqbar, you wanted a Meters thread?

When dixieland bands would play parades they'd be followed by a cacophony of people playing homemade noise makers, pots, pans, whatever. This 'second line' that followed the band would often be a little off and gave the beat a kind of a jump. Eventually jazz and funk drummers started incorporating t...

Re: so Uqbar, you wanted a Meters thread?

How come every time a band or song comes up in this forum I do not know it? Not to drop yet another name/song, you should check out the song "Losing my edge" by the LCD Soundsystem (a side project of producers DFA). It's very funny and a great satire of trendy sounds geeks (of which many of us here...

Re: so Uqbar, you wanted a Meters thread?

Has anyone read the Brother Neville bio? I have it, but it's a few books back in the queue at this point. In a certain way I'm not even sure how much there is to be said about the recording - they are one of those cases where you know it's all about the musician. Here's a fun one though. For me play...

Re: tape revalation.

We were dicussing this last night. Try mixing with bus compression! It works very well in the digital realm. Setup 8 busses or auxillary returns in your software. Place compression on each channel. Something that is soft like blockfish from digitalfishphones. Work with slamming the compressor fairl...

Re: Recording bass amps

Are you talking about cissy strut or "cardova"? same record, and the bass is doubled (i think) with the low end of the keyboard. Sick. I love the way all the meters records sound SO much. Those early ones especially, the drums are INSANE. I'm fairly obsessed with the sound of another Meters album, ...

Re: You ever feel you must get away?

I do the whole daytime office job thing, getting up at the crack of dawn, driving 3 or 4 hours a day, working with boring people that haven't heard of any music besides Kenny G and the Eagles, etc. etc. Then I spend Saturday, Sunday and any evening (that I get home early enough) buried in my studio....

Re: tape revalation.

The funny thing is it was in Logic that I first noticed this problem - and it was serious. I don't use Logic for recording anymore - in part because of this, in part because they ditched Windows, but I still notice this same effect, albeit to a much lesser extent, on my Roland 2480. Part of me think...

Re: tape revalation.

Hey Robert - thanks for the post. So let me run my earlier question back, with a little background. I don't use sick amounts of on board fx. In fact I use none, prefering the sound and interface of good ol fashioned rackmounted gear. Still, when doing a mix, with no processing other than level chang...
