in praise of the RNP
Just got my RNP. My best pre had been the Joemeek VC6Q, followed by the pres on my Tascam Model 3 mixer, the dreaded fART, and old school Mackies mixer pres. Tracking drums yesterday, I my kick (D112) and snare (SM57) through the RNP. "Okay, let's hear that snare." (wood Noble and Cooley) I brought ...

Re: Keyboard into Guitar Amp question
a DI is not made for this purpose, you need something to translate a line level signal to an instrument level signal. All this talk about keyboards and guitar amps got me thinking. A couple months back, eric blam, xonlocust, and I built DIs from the Jensen Transformers site. http://www.jensentransf...

Re: Keyboard into Guitar Amp question
you need something to translate a line level signal to an instrument level signal. Yeah, it does seem like the line level might do some sort of harm, but no one seems to report any! There's a simple circuit on the Jensen site for line to instrument level: http://www.jensentransformers.com/as/as092....

Re: Huge, incredible sounding records.
Maybe not the usual "huge," but Yellowman's "Mr. Yellowman" is like a course in reggae production. The drums sound so goddamn good, I get so hyped I just wanna break stuff! Henry "Junjo" Lawes produced a lot of the early 80s dancehall stuff, and his productions are HITTIN. He also did "Wa Do Dem" by...

Re: Phase question
A Unibit (conical 'stepped' drill bit, about $30 at the home center) works GREAT on Hammond boxes. Since I'm such an idiot, I'm surprised how neatly my DI box came out.
And those Hammonds are very nice enclosures (thanks Dave!).

Re: Studio Projects C3 or AT 4050?
so I am going on personal recommendations and Sound on Sound reviews. Not to get off the point, but I think people's opinions on boards like this one are far more valuable than audio mag reviews. I dig SOS and visit their board occasionally, but it was an SOS review that helped me make the brillian...

Re: critique my mixes
Hey Mark, thanks for listening! Yeah, I think you're right about the cymbals. A friend suggested tightening up the kick a bit and bringing the vocals down. All good suggestions. This stuff is going on an album with tracks from a real studio, so I want these mixes to sound as good as possible. I appr...

critique my mixes
Here are a couple of tunes I recorded and mixed. I am new to mixing and don't have much of a monitoring system, so please offer your constructive criticism. http://indoor_boy.tripod.com/htm/tapeopmp3.htm Just for fun, also on the page is a sequenced beat made of real drums and Jensen DI b...

Re: turntable/preamp for sampling
In a pinch, you can use any home stereo with phono inputs as a phono preamp.
