Re: Zoom H6 preamps?

Way better than using a phone or boom box! I used to record every band pre-production rehearsal for our band with one of those omni Behringer measurement mics hung from the ceiling in a sweet spot. We went on to record at Inner Ear among other places but some of those rehearsal recordings contain o...

Tsunami of PODCASTS: new standards?

I run the DC Public Library's Studio Lab, where we hear every day: "I wanna make a podcast, but I know nothing about anything. Where do I start?" (facepalm quietly) I help them shape their topics and structure, but the Studio Lab is a DIY space and people really like to be left alone to work. They u...

Zoom H6 preamps?

Has anyone here ever recorded live drums and a band into the Zoom H6 using only its onboard preamps? https://www.zoom-na.com/sites/all/themes/zoom/images/products/h6/applications/live-concert-recording.png I've always liked (occasionally loved) the sound of my H4n and H6 built-in mics, and even hook...

Re: "Getting it right on the way in": Channel strips, risk

I get what you're saying about these units not being much better than plugins (if you dive deep into how to really use plugins). I think I'll wait! I used to have the original Grace 101 pre and it was better than my Mbox  Learn to place that mic in the best spot possible - and don't clip your...

"Getting it right on the way in": Channel strips, risk

There is a risk when tracking instruments/vocals/drums through a channel strip? I've always liked it, when I had access to one. I'm in the market for something basic -- dbx 286s, ART Pro Channel II or something on that level. Any recommendations for an all-around channel strip? https://www.gearank.c...

Re: Upping my vocal recording skills

Can you set up a stereo pair out in front of them as they sing live together? I wouldn't be surprised if that captures a nice feel. Do two solid takes of all the singers and mix them together. 3 singers X stereo track --> 6 voices. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/54813413e4b0034aade3a0...

Re: Upping my vocal recording skills

Looks like you have more than enough good tools to get great results. Maybe more important than which mic you choose is how you position it: moving the mics around in front of the singers drastically affects how much head-voice, chest-voice, sibilants, etc. you get. One way would be to set up a LDC ...

Re: Limiter on rough mixes

As long as you're not radically reshaping the sound, just raising the volume for the sake of listening, you kinda have to. It's a tad-bit evil  but almost all of us do it. The concern that applying mastering limiters whilst listening and mixing, as we do, might change the way music sounds on ...

Waves Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain --> thoughts?

Do you use it?
How do you use it?

Parallel drum smasher?!

The Abbey Road eq plugs have been pretty musical to shine things up, so I'm just reading the manual to Waves Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain.

Waves Nx: Virtual Mix Room

https://dt7v1i9vyp3mf.cloudfront.net/styles/news_large/s3/imagelibrary/n/nx011701-OWvHRonC_dpXI.SSAZJXfZDAA6I_n0NN.jpg The goal isn't to mix records on headphones as a substitute for a nice control room. But can you at least use a "virtual mix room" it to get the levels right? This is how they tell...

Re: Automatic EQ Opinions

Ozone... Thoughts about this? --> I sat in the control room at a very expensive studio with diamond-encrusted monitors, and watched this ace ripping through Ozone. Here's what he did: - Set the Maximizer to a ballpark level, then set it to Gain Matching... - He swept through the spectrum in Surgical...

Repairing old corrupted files of yesteryear!?

Anyone know about fixing old corrupted audio? I can still hear parts of the drum machine at the correct tempo, but clearly it's horrifically damaged. Is there any way to scan it in Audition to see what's wrong? Please help! (attached are some images from Audition) This was originally from a cassette...

Re: ~

At it's most basic, a mono-izing plugin should just add the two channels together, preferably divide by two, then spit that result back out to each channel. When it is engaged, in order to STOP a given source from being attenuated as it's panned away from center, you'd need a 6db pan law. Well, act...

Re: eBay seller sent me the wrong mic....

Follow the Golden Rule and send it back if possible. But if they're unresponsive, and if you are fine with having the other mic, then you've done all you can do.
