2 Track AD/DA Converter for Transferring Analog Mixes
I am looking for a 2 track AD/DA converter to transfer 2 track analog mixes to the computer. I would like to spend under $1000. I don't really need preamps, however something like the Apogee Duet, which has preamps is enticing so I could double as a portable 2 track recording system as well, when I ...

Compressing Vocals w/ 2 compressors
I have heard lots of people recommend compressing vocals with 2 compressors in series, usually an 1176 into an LA-2A. I have a Purple Audio MC-77 and a Tubetech CL-1B and I'd like to try this (MC77 ->CL1B) but I am looking for suggestions on how to set each compressor (Ratios, Amount of dB reduction...

VU Meter Reading
I have some questions about VU meters. I am recording to 8 track tape, using 2 consoles and a bunch of outboard compressors. The main console is a Neve 5432, but I also use a Trident Fleximix to get more channels. For example, I am mixing 4 tracks of drums (OHL, OHR, Kick, Snare) on the Trident, and...

I like the idea of the ADAMs for size, price and portability. Not knowing what room I will be recording a particular session in, they seem fine for the job, along with using 2 sets of headphones that i know an trust well. I still am not sure why these are a better choice than NS10s however. Regardle...

The Phonitor looks cool, but for 2K I don't think so.... Was recommended ADAM A3x - thoughts on those? Also, I will be using 2 large baffles while recording, that I can put around me while mixing to create a no-reflection zone. Still wondering if the NS10/Bryston is a better investment in the long r...

Best Monitors for Portable Studio
I am looking to get monitors. I am considering NS10s with a Bryston power amp, and possibly an Auratone 5C. Right now I monitor with headphones only (Headroom Microamp, AKG K702 and ATH-M50) My recording rig is portable, so I am looking for something that will work well in different environments. I ...

this brings me to another question about compression techniques while using multiple mics on a source. let's say I'm recording kick drum and blending 2 mics to a single track on tape. one mic is inside the hole and another mic is outside the drum, 3 feet back to pick up more of the air, and the natu...

its between an m160, ns10 speaker or D12 for my for a second kick mic. i would def use the m160 for other applications as well, so thats a front runner, though if the 421 doesn't get enough low end, and the 160 wont make up for it, it may make more sense to pair the 421 with a ns10 subkick or D12. t...

Beyerdynamic M160 on KICK
Was reading about Joe Barresi recording for Queens of the Stoneage: "On kick drum I always love a mic in and out. Inside I prefer the Sennheiser MD421 ? I'm not a huge D112 fan. If the 421 doesn't work, the next choice would be a [Shure] Beta 52. Outside could be anything, an NS10 speaker, a 47 FET,...

buying cables today, but still confused on what to use to properly connect the Trident 1/4" direct outs and inserts to all the balanced outboard equipment I have, as well as the tape machine. Everything in the rig, except for the Trident and Tape Machine is balanced XLR connections (outboard compres...

i'll be getting a distressor and a Tube Tech CL-1B. Figure i'll use the MC77 and CL-1B for vocals/bass as a dedicated comp while tracking, the distressor on kick and the 1178 on drum overheads. then during the mix i will experiment mixing and matching for anything that still benefits from compressio...
