Will do. I'm really wondering what could have suddenly caused this problem. They worked fine the day before, and they have not been moved or jostled. Also, I'm not very comfortable working inside power supplies - inside microphones, no problem - but in power supplies, I worry about voltage. I will b...

We need more vintage studio photos of dotted acoustic tile. It will explain everything. (Or prove our collective insanity.)

[Group Buy Mic] Ouch... Group Buy mic just SHOCKED me!

Well, I was afraid something like this would happen. I've got a pair of those TNC ACM-310 pencil tube condenser mics, and last night - during a nylon string guitar overdub session, no less - one of them started buzzing suspiciously in the monitors. It wasn't a super loud buzz, but noticable - like s...

That's all the justification I need! I'm getting rid of my OC703 tomorrow!

They look so cool I'm almost serious.

I completely agree that they are the coolest. Please, someone justify their meager acoustic properties so I can get a box! I already have a 12 x 12" grid ceiling.

Especially these, with the offset holes - retro awesome:

I'm wondering if the lollipop shape (and the relatively open/exposed capsule, as compared to a U87 style mic body) has something to do with it's less shrill top end.

Well, I tried them on piano - a big old Steinway upright. Sounded very nice, but once I got them onto drum kit, I never moved them. They seem to have a soft top, almost ribbon like. Works very well on my house kit (a mid-'60s Rogers). I would love another pair, actually. They seem to be the rare Chi...

I too have a pair of the TNC ACM-100s. I believe they are knock-offs of the Audix piano mics. These: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/SCX25aPS/ Can't recall where I heard that... probably from asking way back when the group buy got under way. Curious what you use your's for? I've been happy wi...

Open Jam at drawingroom

I host a semi-regular "open jam" at my studio. We mike up all the instruments, invite a bunch of musicians over (often former/current/future clients), and everyone plays for 5+ hours, pure improv. Usually goes until 3-4 in the morning. Only rule is nothing can be prepared. It's a great way to meet t...

Yeah, I get that it would be easiest to film them miming the tune after it's done. But I don't think that's what going on - in one of their interviews, they specifically talk about keeping things authentic and not doing that. And I'm also not so sure I get how it would be be easy to edit live footag...

Pomplamoose, VideoSongs, etc: Anyone know how it's done?

I'm fascinated with those little Pomplamoose clips, mostly because it so closely documents my own favorite way of producing music (lots of inspiration, lots of cool weird instruments ready-to-go, spontaneous melodies, etc). My question though - what is their process for producing the VIDEO part of i...

Hey, I've got an old Altec 1592 (a 1592A, actually). What are you planning on doing with yours? Modding it? Using it stock for xxx?

I've never really used mine much, and have wondered if it's worth keeping/tweaking, or selling at some point.

I often think the word "bright" has taken a reputation nosedive not unlike the term "liberal". In the 70s/80s, there was no problem with describing something as bright. Now it's almost an insult!

"Fitzgerald" might be the first single I ever bought. I can't remember if it was that one, or "Bohemian Rhapsody". Definitely one of those two. I was 7-8 years old, growing up in Michigan in the mid-'70s, when the Lightfoot song came out. It was the talk of the playground at Leonard Elementary, beli...
