Definitely under a grand. I'd also consider getting a separate phono pre and having the "preamp" be pretty much just a source selector and attenuator.

you can cut down cymbals that have edge cracks no problem. I've been playing a ride for years that I had to cut down by about an inch. works great. Trick is to get it early.

Make sure you don't use an exact 10" replacement for the 8x10, as those are 32ohm.

I'm trying to measure a DC voltage at a very high load (somewhere around 15Meg). At this level, do I need to be cautious about my DMM's impedance, lest the reading become inaccurate?

This got covered a month or 2 back in the DIY forum. The upshot is that a DI will impedence match hi-z instrument to mic-level, but a dedicated reamp will do line to hi-z. Close, but not quite the same, and also some reamp designs have an attenuator built in.
